Damn, my timing is lousy. Bilstein closed

out in CA for the fires. Obviously my first concern is for the safety of all the residents and companies out there. Fire is a nasty thing.

In the meantime, my Bilsteins are out there to be revalved, and now Bilstein is closed indefinitely due to the fire evacuations. Needed them revalved this week, so I could get them back on the car, corner balanced and aligned so the car can go on the transporter for VIR by Nov 14, which is just 3 weeks from now. But I guess I'm SOL for this track event.

Depending on where bilstein is located the evacuations usually only last a couple of days. The winds are supposed to be down by tommorrow, Tuesday but I'd keep trying them.

Poway CA. Hopefully it's brief, but I'm sure the employees area also dealing with their homes too.

DonNewton 10-22-2007 11:41 AM

We have 250K people under mandatory evacuation owing to the fires. While Bilstein is closed, most of its people MAY live in areas that are not affected. So, if the factory remains intact, after everything dies down, they could be back at work. Right now, however, we're not having a real good time.

Agreed. I almost feel guilty worring about something as trivial as my shocks when others are worrying about their homes. I'm sure the rest of us will keep y'all in our thoughts over the next few days. Be safe.

I think my 911 is on fire right now...I'll trade you.

village idiot 10-22-2007 02:34 PM

Anyone know the areas affected by the evacuations??

scottb 10-22-2007 02:38 PM

In the "big picture" it would seem to me that missing a track day is minor compared to what is going on in San Diego and other parts of SoCal. Hopefully they'll get the parts back to you in time for the upcoming event. If not, there will be others, no doubt.

Agreed. I've lost a 911 to a fire, and a 914/6 and a home to a flood. Fortunately in the fire noone was hurt, but in the flood, there were casualties.

My point in posting at all was to make fun of myself and my lousy timing. And of course Life is of utmost importance, property a distant second, and a set of shocks is way down on the list.

DonNewton 10-22-2007 04:29 PM

The evacuations are in place, both mandatory and voluntary, from the Mexican border up to Escondido. What looks like a fire front of about 60 miles. All heading west towards you in Hawaii! With all the smoke in the air, we're having an early sunset, and getting ready for an exciting night. With any luck, the Santa Anas will die down tonight and give us all a break. Up in Poway, Rancho Bernardo, and Fallbrook, it appears that somewhere between 100 and 250 homes have been lost. The northern arm of this fire is not contained and is out of control. At least here on the southern arm of the fire, the CA firefighters say they may be able to set up a defensive line and "stop" it.

I was wondering why M A Shaw wasn't answering their phones. I guess I have my answer. Man, that's a scary deal.

I have an offer to wrench at a friends soon to be opening motorcycle shop in Cali and every time I hear of something like this happening it puts the thought of moving out there right at the back of the list of alternative places to live.

Fires are picking up in Poway. Atleast in the evening it's easier to see where they are. They haven't evacuated us yet, but RV is ready to go. The 4 P-cars will stay!

You can use THIS MAP and select a fire and get more information regarding containment, evacuations etc...

Jeff Alton 10-22-2007 08:56 PM

Shawn, are you serious, my southern CA geography sucks, but I thought the fires may be close to you. Hopefully your family and Ira and Mark are not in harms way.

Cheers

I just found out that my friend towed my car from his house, he didn't have a trailer but he made a deal with somebody and towed their trailer as long as my car was on it...I was worried about my car but I just finished talking to a friend who lost his house and that put my problems in perspective. I can't tell if my parents house (including a couple race cars and the shop) burned down yet but they are still fighting the fires up there.

Cory's house looks like it may be fine.

I talked to Ira earlier today and he sounds good, hopefully it stays that way.

Mark is north of us up near oceanside so he should be okay, but I haven't talked to him today.

Thanks Jeff. We are fortunate to have a lot of firemen down here that are putting their lives on the line to protect our homes and families. My family and friends are safe and that is what is important to me. I will give you a call once I catch up on sleep, I was evacuating horses until 4:00 am.
