looking at 67 911s

Looking a 67 911s and i'm looking at the car wondering to myself, How can i determine if the car is truely a s model? Anything to look at in particular, vin number, interior, engine? When they say engine numbers matching, is that matching the vin number? Thanks

I just realize this could be the wrong forum, please move if its out of topic.

VIN should end in S
Engine number should be in the right range for an S and be type 901/02
Interior should be black vinyl with 7300 rpm tach and chrome strips on door panels
"Numbers matching" means you pay over $100 for the Certificate of Authenticity from Porsche and it tells you what engine came with the car. No way to match without that, but if you post the engine number here we can help with whether it's in the range.

Good luck, this is the right place.

If it really is an S then there is a lot more research you want to do. Check with the 911S registry (google 911s registry). You will need the VIN range, the engine type and engine number range and where to find them. If the seller says it is numbers matching, that means that he/she must have a Certificate of Authenticity (COA) from Porsche which identifies the VIN and engine number that was put in the car at the factory. The two numbers are not identical but will "match" according to the factory.

1967 911S unique items

Joe, there are five walk up and look areas (that are easy to see and identify) where the 1967 911S differ from the regular 911:
1) the 911S engine serial numbers start with 96x xxx, normal are 90x xxx .

2) Suspension will have a rear sway bar/drop links mounted to pins that are welded thru the rear trailing arms (banana arms).

3) Vented brake rotors on all four corners.

4) Body Vin on the stamped aluminum trunk tag will be numbers only in the "Fahrgestelb-Nr. box, the box above it will be "Typ" and read "911S". Stamped numbers on the frame above the gas tank will be "numbers" and "S". Paint tag in the drivers door frame can be numbers with a later stamped "S" half way out of the box.

5) Tack reads 7200 red line.

There are about 52 unique part numbers for the 911S covering everything from the 901/02 trans to the wide bumper trim items, to the leather steering wheel.

If the car has the right first 5 items its a pretty good bet its a real-deal car. Hope this helps.
Bob

Thanks guys for all the info, bad news car is already sold.

I saw it on craigslist last night around midnight, looks like the guy didn't know what he had. Called this morning and somebody bought the car already, the car was listed on craigslist for about 12 hours. He was listing the car for 5800 or best offer and he said he sold it cheap, i'm assuming even less than that.

I'll keep on looking..

I mean on the dash, as opposed to wood (64-66) or Silver metal (Normal)
