Giant can in rear well

I have a giant black canister mounted in the very top of my right rear wheel well... never noticed it before. Can someone tell me what this thing is?

Thanks.

Search. this question is asked almost weekly it seems. It's emmissions control related.

Okay... finally found something... appears to be a gas vapor charcoal recovery cannister. Mine appears to be disconnected. Should I just remove it or should I attempt to re-attach it proper? Not sure what it's good for... since I don't have to worry about passing emissions where I'm at.

Try hard to reattach it!

Search for the very serious reasons why. If you can't, then avoid parking in an enclosed garage...

It's probablly [99%] the charcoal emmissions canister. Part of the emmissions control system. If you don't have to pass emmissions testing anymore > you can probablly ditch it. You probablly have an air pump also . the gizmo off to the drivers side - driven by fan belt.. with hardware/plumbing underneath the car > air injection into the exhaust [to dilute the exhaust emissions]..

Officially > you are not suppose to modify emmissions systems ... but now > it's all excess weight...
