Ignition, Lack of! on my 1967
The car was running before I removed engine parts for sand blasting, cleaning and painting. When I put it back together it wouldn't run! So I changed the Dizzy cap and rotor arm, because they looked pretty grotty. Still no good. I have fuel. I don't have 12v on the high side of the coil, when following the cable back to the ignition unit V is still not present, but if I disconnect the cable from the ignition unit V is on the spade connector at the unit. Is it normal that the V drops when connected? Is there some test's I can do?
Thanks in advance. James. |

James,
Has your ignition been converted to a CDI system, and if so, what mfr? Your use of 'unit' makes me think so ...

Ignition
The part number looks like Bosch D or 0 227200 001 this heat sinc looking Aluminium housing that whistles when you turn the ignition on. I have seen John Cramer's post refering to a blue coil that is compatible with the DCI, mine isn't blue! But my car was running before I touched it.
What do you think about the voltage drop when connected to the coil? Regards, James. |

OK, that's a Bosch CDI unit.
NEVER connect anything to the positive side of the coil, you will fry the CDI. ![]() If the ignition box is whining then you have power and ground to the unit. Make sure the trigger wire from pin "C" is connected to the points and the wire from "A" goes to the coil positive. The output of the CDI is 460 volts only when the capacitor fires, which is why you can't see it when you measure. If you try to measure it with a meter you will blow the CDI and a new one is about $150 used.
