Question on Visual Tuning Guages

All, I recently purchased some parts from Performaceproducts.com and they shipped a full-color catalog with my new parts. Inside the catalog, but not on their web site store, they advertise a "K&N Visual Tuning Guage" that is a small guage along with an O2 sensor for adjusting the perfect air-fuel mixture of 14.7. Since performancproducts does not show this on their web site, I googled it and found one here: http://www.sudco.com/tool.html#005-200

My question; First, do you think this will work for the CIS adjusting? Second, do you thing the O2 sesnsor can be mounted in the existing port on the left side of the stock Cat-convertor (83 SC)... reason I ask is because I have a plug "thingy" on the driver side of my cat-convertor and the peformance product description says that you have to weld a mounting nut to your header pipe and I was hoping this K&N O2 sensor would screw right in to that phantom port without any welding of a mounting nut. Lastly, does anyone have any experience with these visual tuning guages?

Would be nice to be able to use this device to do the CIS AFR tuning, it list for $168.95.

Thanks

If you're referring to the K&N A/F ratio gauge, I'd pass on that and use instead a Gunsun CO meter.

The K&N includes a regular O2 Sensor, the same type as used in your car (but maybe without a heating circuit). O2 Sensors are primarily sensitive to 14.7:1 A/F ratio. You could buy a separate A/F Gauge and connect to the existing sensor - same effect.

You can use the O2 sensor you already have to do a quick check of the mixture. The key is to know the voltage output and what it means. If I remeber correctly, you use a multimeter and check the output voltage when the car is warmed up.

Would you be referring to this Gunsun: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Gunson-portable-12V-powered-exhaust-gas-analyzer_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ43989QQihZ017Q QitemZ270179002024QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW

Is this the recommended unit, or is there a less expensive one? I've seen folks on this list talking about renting one that another Pelican member had purchased... also an LM-1 ??

I don't remember the Gunson being that high. Maybe there was a recent price increase or my memory fades. Ebay is sometimes a good indicator of the going price, sometimes not. There is an official Gunson website.

If available, you'd be better off renting an LM-1. It's much more accurate (uses a wide band O2 sensor) and able to measure A/F ratios throughout the rpm range, not just at idle. The Gunson has just enough volume capacity to adjust idle mixture.

And no matter what, I'd order anything that you need from Pelican Parts instead of the other PP vendor. Pelican Parts is much better if for no other reason than that they host this great site.

Of course their prices and customer service are top notch too.
