Strut Insert Removal Tip Needed
Last night I tried to remove the strut insert from my '79SC following the directions shown in Wayne's book but I could not get the unit to pull out. I removed the roll pin and pulled the strut out from under the fender but try as I might it was stuck in there good and tight. Can anyone provide any tips on how to free the insert?
Thanks, Kevin |
IIRC, there is a little rubber sealing ring around the top of the strut insert that will make a hellacious vacuum from the oil trapped down in the strut body. Use a dentist's pick to pull the sealing ring out, then the insert should just pull out. HTH,

The best way to remove the insert/cartridge is to remove the strut from the car. Also a great opportunity to clean and examine for wear the rotor, caliper, brake lines, tie rod, control arm, sway bar and all bushings in the front suspension. You will also want to repack front bearings including replacing new wheel seals at the inside of the hubs. It's good experience and adds to your knowledge of how your Porsche works.

put the top washer and nut back on and use a hammer under the washer. an air hammer if you have one.

Many thanks. I'll have at it tonight and see what transpires.
