Corner Balance Scales

If I was to "hypothetically" buy a set of corner balance scales, would the 1,100 lbs scales be sufficient or would I need to get the 1,500 lbs ones?

These are the Accuset scales from Long Acre.

Well, since you'll need one at each wheel, four 1100 lb scales would add up to a total of 4400 lbs. More than enough to do a 911. If I'm understanding the question correctly that is...

If each scale can handle 1100 lbs (total car wt. 4400lbs) you're fine... if that is the total max wt. you don't want those... I can only assume you mean the former.

I know total capacity is fine. I'm not expecting the 911 to weigh more than 2,900 lbs.

I'm asking if I will need more than 1,100 lbs at any one wheel. I don't think I will, but wanted to check.

Let's assume you have a new Porsche.

At approx. 3500 lbs., 60% of that weight sits on the rear wheels. Thus,
60% x 3500 = 2100 lbs. / 2 wheels = 1050 / rear wheel - borderline weight for an 1100 lb. scale.

An early 911 is about 1000 lbs lighter making the 1100 lb. scale more than adequate for anything up to about 2000 lbs per end or 4000 lbs. total.

Hope this helps,

Sherwood

I'd check to make sure the scale can handle an overload without becoming damaged. When you drive the car onto the scales somewhat unevenly, or you bounce the car a bit, or if you're using a jack the car is lowered unevenly or suddenly, you could easily generate an additional few hundred pounds on one wheel, which might get you over the limit on the rear of the car. I'd think they would put a metal stop of some sort in the scale so it won't become damaged, but manufacturers of all sorts of products are very creative cost cutters these days....
