Protecting Cad And Zinc Plating...

Howdy,

Has anyone had any success with spraying clear over Type II Cad and or Zinc plating to give it a little more longevity? I appreciate the clear coat can change the color a bit, but is it worth it. I'm thinking of the fan housing strap in particular which I'm finishing in Type II Cad.

I can't imagine it would stick without primer. It'll probably end up peeling.

The plating is the protective coating just keep it clean. A little WD40, after cleaning, probably won't hurt to keep it looking nice.

I was trying to get some input on this since my plater had told me that some of the concour people put a clear coat over the cad. I haven't tried it and I wanted to know if anyone had done this with any success.

I have used a clear plasti-kote spray years ago on brass and it never came off and there are others at Eastwood.com that are designed to go over metal without peeling off or even being noticeable.

If the cad has a clear chromate over it things should be fine.

I've used a clear over Cad with success and also had some Cad parts clear powder coated.... no problems yet!

FWIW: I've used a product called "So Shure" (yellow label) from LHB industries, got it from my cousin who is a former Coastie.

Protects fittings exposed to the elements, particularly salt spray, etc.

Sprays out as a liquid, sets up to a hard clear coating. Does not resist abrasion well, but is meant for static applications, such as seams, bolts, etc. Thins with lacquer thinner.

I've used it on trailing arm bolts, spring plate nuts & bolts, brass brake unions, etc. Not concours, but I figure if it's good enough for a Coast Guard destroyer, it's good enough for hardware people can't see.

Used VHT clear over Yellow Dye Chromate and it never came of. Still looks good.
