Oddball 911R question: wipers
Anyone know if the prototype or production 911Rs retained the windshield wiper fluid spraying systems?
Obviously, in the conditions raced, the wipers were important. But what about the fluid? Or, in our never-ending quest to shed ounces, can we authentically dispense with that? Admittedly, an easier question for those of us who live in parched SoCal; then again, sadly, the fluid is good for removing ashes from the windshield. Related: let me say that I'm glad to hear Supertec and friends are safe, and let's hope all other SoCal Pelicans are safe and their houses spared.

In many of the pics I have seen of the existing 911Rs, the spray nozzles are still there on the front cowl. In rallying, at least, the ability to wash mud splatter, etc., off the front screen would still be a requirement, it seems to me, so I don't think the system was deleted.
That said, on my R-look car for lo-Cal, I took the water reservoir and spray system out and welded up the holes in the cowl before it was painted, but I am not doing a faithful replica--more of a "tribute" hotrod SWB car. YMMV, TT

I have on my shop door a poster-size photo of one of the original 911Rs--license S-90416--parked at the factory when the cars were originally built, and it has two conventional wipers conventionally parked, and two chrome washer outlets in the stock locations.

Yeah, I guess I could have just looked at my many stock-piled photos. Then again, that doesn't necessarily mean the guts are intact.
But yeah, Tom, I think you're right: for the kind of racing these cars did, the sprayers would have been useful. I'll probably remove mine though and do what you did. Neither of my other two Porsches had/have working sprayers, and I get by just fine without them. Weight loss!

Well spotted Tom!
Nevertheless, I'll most likely be adopting your approach, removing the whole system and welding up the holes.
