Valve adjustment

How often should i do a valve adjustment. I was going to change the oil and tranny fluid today and thought about checking the valves as well. The manuals kinda contradict themselves when talking about doing these things together. On one hand they want you to change the oil and tranny fluid while the engine is warm because you will get more oil out of the car and more metal in the oil for the oil change and the tranny fluid change. On the other hand you should adjust your valves when the engine is could, preferably left over night. How do you do them both?

Also, if I cant find swepco tranny oil could someone recommend another? is there a generic gear oil weight i should be looking for at the local NAPA or PEP boys?

Thanks

JW uses 80/90 GL5 in the 915.
If it's good enough for him, it's good enough for me.
Make sure it says GL5.
Before you drain, make sure you can open the plug to re-fill the transmission.
Here is what I do:
Engine hot, drain oil, leave it draining overnight.
Next day, adjust valves.
For the transmission, it's thicker, so, leave it draining all night.
For re-fill, I use a cheap suction type hand pump with a short piece of tubing to fit into the hole, works good.

To refill the tranny I always get the cheap hand pump that screwes into the oil bottle. Little hard on the wrist but it is pretty easy to work with from under the car and cost about $5 so you can throw it away when your done.
