911 / 914 Horn Pad Question

I'm thinking about swapping out the 400mm steering wheel on my '71 911E with a 914/914-6/RS 380mm wheel. Does anybody know if these two use the same horn pad (bow tie)? Or does the 380mm require a narrower horn pad?

hey scott,

not sure if this is the same pad you're talking about.

this foto is of the same horn pad on a '73 date stamped 911 wheel and on a '74 914 wheel. the pad fits the same on both wheels. (wheels not to scale)

and as you probably know, a 914 wheel doesn't have the 2 counter sunk holes needed to mount the 911 turn signal cancel ring, (914-6 wheels do), so you would need to drill and tap them, or you could just cancel the signal manually.

oh yeah ..... i'm no expert so someone please correct me if i'm wrong.

hope this helps!!

Thanks Doug! That is the piece I was talking about. Now I can shop for a nice wheel that doesn't necessarily include the horn pad, and use the one I currently have on the 400mm wheel.

380mm versus 400mm is a mere 20mm, or 1cm on both sides. If you took one wheel off and put the other on and let me drive, and did the "Pepsi" challenge with the wheels, I'm not sure I'd be able to tell the difference between the two. 1cm on both sides - that's the equivalent of the width of the Sharpie pen sitting on my desk.

Honestly, I don't think that it will be what you're looking for (if what you're looking for is a significantly smaller wheel).

I'm not. Just marginally smaller
