Front Trunk Fresh air question

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1193592169.jpg

Recent update on my SC AC vents to the Carrera style vents has left me with a question about the ac and fresh air tubes, seems the PO hacked the system and didn't reconnect a tube ...the above photos says it all...does anyone have a photo reference how it is supposed to look like?

jbrand540 10-28-2007 11:01 AM

Hard to tell form the picture exactly what orientation I am looking at but to me that looks like the drain hole hook-up at the bottom of the fresh-air blower unit.

JMatta 10-28-2007 11:28 AM

I agree...looks like the drain hole. I just had mine apart because I was getting water in the trunk; turns out the drain hose rotted and split. Not sure what the prior owner did...perhaps a little larger picture of the area will identify to all.

Guys

That "drain hole" actually is part of the AC tubing...the other side goes to the AC vents

Guys this is the interior view of that tube...its supposed to connect to the AC vents

Ah, I've recently spent some quality time with my ventilation system. I think I'm evolving extra joints in my fingers...

On my '77, that hole you show to the left of the passenger-side hood shock and the distribution box goes to part #20 on this diagram:

http://www.pelicanparts.com/cgi-bin/PartsLookup/search.cgi?command=show_page&Catalog_Name=911_USA_ 74_77_KATALOG&Illustration=813-05&Line_Item=

The corresponding narrow diameter flesh-colored hose from the driver's side goes to it as well. The piece itself is natural-color hard plastic, there's a plug on it, looks like the resistor pack for the blower motor is mounted in there, it mounts under the squirrel cage.

IIRC, the large diameter hose from the same piece goes to the center vent in the dash.

HTH. Lemme know if you want some fuzzy cell-phone pics of it...

Frank, I have that thru hole on the passenger side of my 78SC. The car came with factory AC and I have never thought much about it until now. I think it is indeed the connection thru the bulkhead that provides fresh air to the side vents. I think AC equiped cars came with a different valve assembly. Look at part 18 [upper left hand corner] in the link spuggy provided. Notice the large outlet that feeds the center dash vent. To the right of that large outlet is a small tube-like outlet that connects to part 30 [paper hose] and then to the hole thru the bulkhead. This control valve differs from the one on my car and the one you have pictured above.

FenderGuy 10-28-2007 07:40 PM

Ron

I just noticed that...hmmmm interesting? how wierd my other control; valve is the same way

spuggy 10-29-2007 05:19 AM

Hmm. Ron reminds me that I neglected to mention that my car originally had A/C - apparently factory, although it's all been removed.

Here's some pictures, they're worth a kiloword... :)

That is way differnet then what mine has

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1193672747.jpg

as you can it has a tube to go to the drivers side ac vents and also the center vent but not the passengers side ac vent

LM3929 10-29-2007 09:51 AM

that opening generally has a rubber like cap on it as the interior vent is supplied with cold air from the lower adapter in the centre of the smugglers box.
If it didn't have factory air, there was a different upper vent adapter was used with a smaller sized discharge that supplied air through your vent hole in question to the dash vent.

I can upload pics of the vent latter if you need them.

LM

will need them thanks

I can't find the pic of the left (pass) side defrost unit but it can be plumbed as the right side is if you are going with out airhttp://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1193714008.jpg

both of these are from different cars, the top is a 78 Targa without air
the second a 78 Targa with air

All, I have an 83 SC Cabriolet. It has factory AC, but no cold air blows from the side dash vents, only the center vent ( my side vents also do not have the thumbwheel for controlling the volume of air from the vents). However, fresh air does blow from the side dash vents. I too have those ducts on the inside trunk, passenger and driver side, but no hoses connected to them. What I do not undesrtand, is how it is possible that cold air can be directed to the side dash vents at all. On my evaporator box I have only one way for the blower air to exit the box and that is via a 3-inch duct channeling the evaporator fan air to the center vent on my dash. This appears to be a direct connection with no other opportunity for a tap to channel air to the side vents, or any other vents.... I don't even think cold air comes out of the bow-tie vent under the dash! I am really confused. I am the third owner of this car, have I bought an experiment?

What are those two red wires on the air distributor - the "T" pipe. Where do those wires connect to on the opposite end?

If you mean these?

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1193762003.jpg

There's actually 3 wires (red, red/green stripe, white/red stripe), and there's what looks like a wirewound resistor pack on the other side of that plug (inside the pipe).

I presumed they controlled the speed of the hamster wheel (i.e. both resistors for slow, one for medium, none for "full-tilt"), which would make it connect to the vent controls in the dash - although I never actually checked.

LM3929 10-30-2007 08:56 AM

The two red wires appear to be aftermarket installation , I haven't seen them on anything else.

There should be an adapter that gets air from the evap. box top 3" vent with the bottom half suppling A/C to the driver center and passenger side vent.

The top half of that adapter supplies the center vent and left side vent.
