6 Pin CDI Connector
I'm rewiring the engine compartment. I picked up some AMP connectors for the CIS stuff. However, I need to get the male 6 pin connector from the CDI box rewired.
Question is, how do I get the female spade connectors out of the 6 pin female plug ( I am not using my usual bull-in-the-china-shop method here), or where can I find a new one? TIA Pat

Pat,
A flat-bladed jeweler's screwdriver can bend down the captive tap if you put it in under the 'flat' portion of the Faston from the open end. After it is bent down far enough ... the Faston will be free to move back and forth in the molded nest. AMP makes the locking Fastons, so any well-stocked supplier should be able to get them, but you may have to buy a minimum of 100.

You are indispensable! I think the small screwdriver I was using was too large to get the tab. BTW, what kind of cable can I use for the "green coax'? I have one of your posts bookmarked regading this, I'll try and track it down in any case. My connector to the distributor became completely disintegrated, and I was just going to pick up an easier-to-find male and female connector block. The AMP stuff is so hard to find. Pat

Almost any good, brand-name coax in the 0.1" - 0.195" OD jacket range with stranded wire inner conductor should work. RG-58 and RG-174 are readily available, and easy to work with. I prefer working with the Teflon-insulated coax, so I keep some on hand, thus I would probably use RG-180, RG-188, RG-316, or RG-400. I have RG-180 and RG-188 currently on a spool, so one or the other would be my first choice, depending on how tight a bend radius is needed. Same criteria for picking between the 'tiny' RG-174 or the 'regular' RG-58.

The jeweler's screwdriver worked out well. In my impatience to finish this, I said to myself maybe I can reuse the fastons, as the other connectors I have on hand don't have the lock tab in the same spot. So, I took one apart carefully, bent the copper back away from the wire, put a new wire in the old faston, and soldered it. The connection seems pretty good to me. Of course, I only have two finished at this time, it is very time consuming. Pat

Are you re-wiring the '78 SC? I dropped the engine/trans from mine a couple of months ago. I have been slowly cleaning everything. I am very interested in your re-wiring project. Will this be a wiring harness replacement? Thanks, Tom 1978 SC |

I just finished most of the hard rewiring tonight. I'll get some photos up for reference. I did selective rewiring, of all of the 6 pin connector (except for the coax; waiting for wire), rewired 90% of the 14 pin connector, and just about all of the remaining wiring. I'm too cheap to buy a wiring harness...also, I'm only using about half of the 14 pin connector, I have lots of deleted stuff. Pat

Don't get dismayed by this, but rewiring is a PITA. The reason I got started with this is a while-I-was-in-there repair for the blown up airbox. Random wiring photos.
