Premuffler: Dansk vs Fabspeed vs...
OK, I'm taking the plunge: Euro-type premuffler, sport muffler, SW chip.
I read about some problems with Fabspeed premufflers here, and I'm wondering whether it's worth trying to find a Dansk, or is there no difference in fit & construction between the Dansk & Fabspeed premufflers? I've also run across a Schnell brand premuffler - any comments? I'm keeping my O2 sensor, so I'd like to get one with the O2 sensor mount. BTW, the car is an '87 3.2, with a stock engine & drivetrain... for now... Thanks. |
I have a Bursch cat-bypass. Steel construction, O2 sensor ready, no fitment issues, cheaper than a Fabspeed or Dansk. It's a little louder than the two items in question, but sounds great with my M&K.
My 2¢. |
Which M & K do you have 1 in 1 out or 1 in 2 out?

I had a schnell, it was such a "pos" that I took pictures and sent them to vertex and got a return authorization and sent it back and I got a refund. It never made it on the car. It was that bad. I would probably check into a GHL if you want stainless, they have a 100% guarantee if you are not satisfied your money back, or if you don't mind mild steel then maybe Bursch.

About 3 years ago I purchased new a Fabspeed premuffler that had poor fitment out of the box. I had contacted Fabspeed and got a little run around at first, then they discovered there was jig problem and a batch of them got out that were bad (welded at a slight angle). Joe Fabiani (the owner) was ultimately easy to deal with and I got one that was welded up properly, fit perfect, tracked mine several times in the heat with no issues- very happy with it. If you are worried about sound/noise increase its really not an issue with his premuffler- its sort of like a straight-through glasspack. I like mine.
Dansk on the other hand...I have a 1 in-2 out muffler of theirs...the quality and fitment has been spotty at best and it took 3 mufflers from the factory to get one to fit properly. "Danskman" on this forum and Pelican Parts ultimately made everything right, but what a pain. The one I ended up with still has a flange that was welded up off angle, so its impossible to get the tips aligned horizontal from one side of the car to the other. No comment on Schnell...never used them. 2 "musts"= absolutely *do not* get rid of the O2 sensor, and absolutely do get a 911 Chips chip for your car (Steve Wong). :) BG |

I got an email form Ben at M&K yesterday confirming the NLA status of the 1 in 2 out for the Carrera. Seems there is little or no gain in this configuration. Ben offered that with the "pre-muffler" and the M & K 1 in 1 out combined with the Wong chip you have a near equal to but without the expense of the SSI exchangers-2 in 1 out setup. Only thing is you don't have those beautiful exchangers hidden back there!
I'm about to pull the trigger and buy an 85 Targa (Dark blue) and I'll probably take Ben's advise and go with the pre-muffler/M&K 1 in 1 out set-up. |

I put on a Fabspeed a few years ago - no fit problems.

I have the Fabspeed no problems, run at Willow Springs several times a year with the muffler by-pass too. Great sound.

Thank you
Thank you VERY much for the inputs.
I was thinking that Dansk was the way to go for quality, as they make the OEM's, but now I'm not at all sure. Does anyone know if the "guts" of the Fabspeed & Dansk premufflers are the same? For sake of discussion, assume for now I'll be using a premuffler with a Dansk 1-in-2-out muffler, and with an SW chip of course. My primary objective is a moderate performance increase, particularly improving mid-range drivability & throttle response. My secondary objectives are a deeper & moderately louder sound, and I really like the look of those dual 84mm outlet pipes. |

Whats the difference between a pre muffler and a test pipe?Marty
|
I have the Dansk premuff, perfect fit and excellent quality. Tone with stock muffler is a bit deeper and a little more throaty. A premuff has some dampening in it, a test pipe is just a straight pipe directly to the muffler made only to make the connection to the muffler.

The Bursch would actually be a test pipe then.
