Anyone ever see a clear decklid?
I'm sure this have been thought of before but I've never seen it mentioned. If Ferrari can show off their engine art why cant Porsche? In fact the sight of that cooling fan in action is down right ....well, cool.
Done before? Pics?

More than a Modena (or most any other car) has to show.
I concede that it would be high on the Bling chart but pretty cool at the same time. What's wrong with offering a dose of this: ![]()

Still a little rough until painted and trimmed out

Clear engine lids are quite popular in the import car scene. Mostly made from sheets of Polycarbonate or Acrylics (Plexiglas). A very basic method is to take the plastic sheet, position it over the real metal lid and heat it so it becomes soft and follows the shape of the metal lid. Of course it will take some tweaking and fine tunig to make it fit perfect. Should be not too difficult to make one for a 911 because the basic shape is pretty simple.

Similar to heating acylic I was thinking that one would make a mold from a well fitted tail and then vacuum form a new one in plastic. Would have to be one big A$$ machine though.

I think its a great idea. A sign shops that makes the large lighted outdoor signs could do it.

It'll get dirty fast - but go ahead.
You can also make one with an LCD to show the bottom of the engine - or even the internals if you have a nice high speed ruggedized cam like some manfs. do.

Bumping a near 20 year old thread.
Anyone know of a clear (ish) decklid alternative? Especially for an intercooled turbo .... With the upsurgence of itbs, efi, cerakoting, vapoublasting, there must be an option (that I haven't found)

If you do get enamored of the idea of making your own, keep in mind that a plastic material that can be formed by heat, can also be deformed by heat. It gets pretty warm in the back of my car...

When we were teenagers, a friend bought some clear plastic valve covers for his small block chevy. to this day, he gets annoyed when anyone mentions the melted covers undulating over the rocker arms. I got a good laugh anyway.
