89 Carrera/electrical,..you better check this!

FIRST: the preface.....

What a day.....7 AM run to work, on the interstate,...cool brisk morning....all of a sudden, I smelled the old electrical-heating smell...no smoke or any visuals...all gauges working normally....I'm running the heaters, the fog/L's, etc. I power down the heaters blowers wondering WTF is up,...fire? Voltmeter showing nothing strange. Smell subsided. At destination, all fuses fine, none showing any heat fatigue. . I understand what ALL will need to be checked in tis situation, compliments of MANY Pelicanitic gracious threads on this forum (Yeap: the search button) . As to the contention that the gauge lighting, glove box, others circuits are not fused by Porsche (and having this 3 Amp fuse addition at my switch being on my to do list), I happened to visit my Bentley this evening to actually notate the circuit diagrams for the lighting..IT"S LATE,....I"M PISSED...and am probably overlooking something here, so,...please, PLEASE: someone SHOW me in the Bentley where these UNFUSED paths are?!?!?!?! Back to the damned supply...

In the 970-81 section, Instrument Panel, I can see where the DC sources are noted as "Interior Lighting Systems"...FINE. Yet heading back to the Power distribution section at 970-13, I'm simply not seeing the unfused feedpoint(s)...

.......show me, please. (No factory manual)

NOW, to point....Having experienced this today and spending some time this evening doing some cursory visuals before ripping sh@t out for inspection this weekend,...seated in the passenger seat,..I REMEMBERED SOMETHING I NOTICED OVER 10 MONTHS AGO......had forgotten about it. Has (probably) little to do with my happenings this AM but something to check nonetheless....

With my passenger side door open, I had previously noticed that the wiring loom had worn through to a bit of copper on one wire within the loom. Contact had been made each time the door was fully opened,..wearing the loom. TODAY, I happened to remember this and set off to investigate. I found 2 wires that had been worn through! See the attached pics,..the pics are AFTER I dissected the harness to expose the suspect wires.......a blue/black wire and a green wire. I did my best to get these taped up for now (everything within the door is working fine,...and has been) I'm sure that these circuits are fused so I don't see it related to what happened this AM.
A COMPLETE PAIN IN THE ARSE TO GET TO ANYTHING IN THIS AREA!..... It looks as though the only hope here is to disconnect the connector housing located within the access hole in the bonnet and try to push back some slack so that these wires can be repaired correctly.

Any observations here? Access, etc.? What are these wires in the pic?

Sure wish I had the Porsche manual that would should harness specificity..

You guys may want to check these door areas,..just to snapshot your present "loom integrity".........

.....these wires are gonna' be a pain to repair............

The weekend will include,...checking ALL blowers, pulling guages (changing ALL electrolytics caps out and checking other tolerances...looking for the heated area.............it's definately somewhere.......bonnet lamp/switch is good (new) many months ago. SO far, that is: the afternoon drive home (40 minutes) and a later evening run for 55 minutes offered nothing other than absolute perfect rendering......I know: a timebomb could await me here.

AGAIN: show me where the unfused path for the lighting system lurks on my trusted, cherished 1989.

Thanks!

My best,

It might be nothing more than the heater blower motor. I had that wonderful electrical smell a few weeks ago and I was the heater blower motor giving out. My heating capability now is just like my old 74 coupe.

fast_e_man: I hope you're right...simplicity would do fine!

RoninLB: Thanks. I already have that thread saved for sure. Am taking off today from work to look at my situation.

anybody able to point me to the unfused bus ON THE SCHEMATICS, in the Bentley manual? Maybe a fresh look today will reveal what I could not find yesterday....

Thanks to all...

Best,

After installing the fuse mof for the gauge lights, it became apparent where the page was within the Bentley (as to interior light feeds......) (((geeze,...))) The 3 amper is in place...

Removed both footwell blowers and inspected everything,...nothing looked unusual, however I did find the 10 Amp fuse, passenger side, blown. I've never even checked these blowers during the year of ownership. Reworked both assemblies,..very strong,...quiet.....not the issue with the smell the other day....

No time to remove the guages but will inspect these next,..planning on installing fresh electrolytic caps in the speedo guage, while I'm in there. Good insurance....!!!

...still a bit apprehensive until these guages are checked.......need to check the circuits again for the glove box and ashtray light, as the these circuits are definately NOT on the gauge circuit.

Fuse in place in the smuggler's box (factory),..fuses in place for the footwell blowers (factory)..

Fusebox looks fine, as does underdash wiring and under bonnet wiring.........Hope the guages look ok upon removal...this weekend!!! They sure seem to be in there tightly...

Best,
