Question for you painters (auto body)
I just received 2 parts back for my other car that a body shop painted. They did a pretty bad job (I didn't end up paying.) There are some glitches in the paint. They told me I could wet sand them and buff them out. What grit sandpaper should I use and what should I use to polish them. They are clearcoated metallic.

You need to post a pic. Glitches covers a wide array of mistakes.

The color will also dictate what grit to use as well. On darker colors like black I like to use 2000 grit. Lighter colors like bright reds, whites, yellows I'll use 1500 but that's just me. I'm sure there'll be others chiming in.

I'm curious as to why they didn't wet sand themselves. If the 'glitch' is in the clearcoat then yes they can be wet sanded out, if they're in the basecoat you're SOOL. But you shouldn't have to start with anything less than 400 grit. I'm with Kurt, post a couple pics.

1500 or 2000 grit and then wizard's finish compound. the stuff works incredible. You can find it at paint shops

John,
Who did you use? I'm in the market for a paint job...and would like to know who to stay away from. If you don't want to make it public, PM me. Thanks.

Do you know what brand of clear did they used or how much did they spray?

This was just a local body shop. The parts were for a spoiler and grill for my Legacy Spec B.

It's really hard to post pics. The pieces are fiberglass, and I think the prep work was shoddy. Since the paint is dark grey metallic, it's hard to photograph. Some of it is like blobs in the first photo:

It takes ALOT of work to prep fiberglass right. It also depends alot on the quality of the material. Pinholes in glass is actually quite common. The pinholes will have to be filled, primed and painted again, the splotch is hard to tell from the photos. . Is it just in the clear coat, or lower? Or did they even use a two stage process?

Based on the images - Wet sanding is NOT going to fix what I see.
The first image seems to show an area that is either an air bubble or a poorly prepped area. The second image seems to show an area that has indentations that will need to be filled and sanded. Bottom line, both areas will need to go back down to the base and re prepped and shot.

Well the pics answered my question, why they didn't wet-sand the defects, you can't!!!!
The 2nd pic could also be fisheyes/craters. But yes basically you need a new paint job, WITH the proper prep. Good luck

Thanks for all the replies. You guys are really experts! Went to the body supply place and had a long conversation with the owner. Referred me to a shop that I think will make it right.

wow, just like that and you didn't have to pay? I would say they are too nice.
On the first pic, I would use very fine wet sand, then buff. I wouldn't use buffer machine if it's only that spot you want to buff. Blue magic, hand buff, is good enough. Just an individual opinion.
