Tach sticks and jumps (and one electrical question)
I have an '87 930 turbo and the tach sometimes sticks, sometimes jumps, sometimes oscillates with the turn signal (when signal is on), and in general never works. Previous owner had a replacement on order, but we canceled that when I bought the car. Now having had it in the shop a couple of times, I'm trying to figure out whether the tach needs replaced, worked on, or whether some other problem is causing this. The shop can't locate a replacement Tach so I'm looking for any other possible causes that could be fixed without a replacement.
Another odd thing I've noticed is that after turning on the radio, some stations (with static) clear up when the headlights are turned on. Are there electrical gremlins that are known to strike this era car? Thanks for any comments, suggestions, answers... |

have you had the alternator checked out? i was told a jumping tach is one of the first signs of a bad alternator. just my .02 cents.

Sounds like the voltage regulator.

Mechanic swapped tach for a known good one and still had the same problem. They are looking at the electrical issues now... Glad I didn't buy a new tach! Will update again once they solve this.

Bad alternator. Replaced it and the tach is fine now.
