Porsche Crest Chrome/Alum Window Trim '67 911

Hi

I have a 67 911, that currently has black window trim around the side windows, rear window and windshield. I would like to return the car to its original trim which had the chrome/aluminium trim, as the previous owner obviously changed it when he resprayed the car white. Now that I have had the car resprayed Irish Green, which was its original color the black trim doesn't work as well. Would anyone be able to provide me with a list of parts that I would need to return the car to the original spec, I have been searching on the site, but without some guidance, I'm pretty sure I will muck up my order.

Any help hugely appreciated.

Thanks,

Leo

Leo,

Finding that information is a several hour task, you need either the factory parts manual or the legal version of PET, here's a link to download it for free. All that stuff has been superceded probably so the best thing would be to have yours rechromed. All the cars in junkyards have pitted chrome so it's not like there's any easier way.

leo,

I am trying to do the same thing as you....remove the black and bring back the shine.

I at first thought that the trim was chrome but others have informed me that the trim is polished aluminum. Like you, I am trying to source the all the parts to replace the parts that the PO blacked out. I am wondering if a better solution would be to re-polish the parts back to a shine. Years ago, I had my Fuchs polished to a brilliant shine.....as good if not better than chrome......and I was wondering about locating a place to do the same to my trim. I have no idea about cost but I am throwing this out there as an option, as well as, to see if others have taken this route. When I look at the price of replacing all of the parts with new ones, it makes looking at options a must.

If the black is paint, then paint stripper might remove it. If the metal was scuffed prior to painting, you may have to buff it back.

If the metal was anodized black, you could try yellow can Easy Off oven cleaner. It's what the guys use on the Fuchs wheels.

I thought that the trim was chrome plated brass until '68. I know that this was the case for the window frames, but am unsure about the trim under the 3/4 windows. The trim in the front and rear windshield is aluminum, and has been available new fairly recently, and is reasonable in price.

While you can certainly polish aluminum to a chrome-like finish, it won't stay that way unless you brite-dip anodize it. There is a firm called Annobrite that does this. It is not cheap, but eh only way to restore these components. Polisihing the components will remove any remaining anodizing, and will lead to the components oxidizing.

Yep, '67 is chrome plated brass. Disadvantage of that is, if you try to heavily polish the chrome, it wears down to the brass easily and looks, well, brass colored.
