Noisy 915

I just reinstalled my motor after dropping it to replace the 915 5th gear set and needle bearings. It now makes a rattle noise when the clutch is engaged. Is it possible the needle bearing are bad?

Hmm mine has been doing it for years.......I am waiting for it to be more specific if you get my drift,,
One day I replaced all the CV joints , rear wheel bearings, ring gear bearings ....still dose it.
I think it is the old loose pinion bearing deal....but I have stuck my head in the sand for now

Are you driving differently now? Earlier 911's have a bit of gear rattle when engaging the clutch at low RPM's... Maybe you're being easier on it?

If not, are you sure you torqued the pinion and input shaft nuts enough? Did you stake down the pinion shaft shoulder and replace the steel roll pin on the input shaft?

I think I discovered where I messed up. I suspect the noise is the reverse idler and reverse operating gears lightly touching. Only when reverse is engaged does the sound abate. Unfortunately I'll need to drop the motor to readjust the shift fork. Like I don't have better things to do.

be sure the thrust washer is on top of the idler gear too.

I reopened the tranny and found the idler and reverse gear were lightly touching. Per the manual, I separated them and left a 1mm gap. The rubbing sound is gone, but it now rattles in all gears. When I originally opened the tranny, I noticed the idler and shaft had some play. I would assume that is normal. As JW suggested, I confirmed the thrust washer was installed. What am I missing in this assembly?

Mine does just the opposite. When the clutch is engaged it is quiet as a Church Mouse however when I am sitting in nuetral, without using the clutch, it rattles.

The car has 140K miles on it but still shifts good. If I do not drive crazy, does this noise when in nuetral mean I am looking at a rebuild soon??

I am afraid of the answer.

Best regards,

I again opened the front of the tranny and could find nothing obviously wrong. I removed the reverse idler to observe the bearings. Everything looked intact and no indication of wear. The sound is like a random tap and is definitely coming from the front of the tranny. It's very similiar to the sound of a loose valve. Any suggestions or ideas?
