headlamp calibration
 

I need to calibrate the headlamps so the light beam will point in the right direction. Can this be done in my garage? Can anyone describe a DIY method for this?

I always adjust my headlights at night on a long driveway. I use a long flat driveway so that I can get a good idea of where they are aiming (I have had bad luck trying to adjust them in a garage) and because it is my driveway I don't have to worry about traffic.

if they're completely out of whack you need a correct initial adjustment imo.

Once that is done i adjust my 100 watt low beam on the road. They're up/down at the point where nobody flashes me. For a left 90 turn i'l tweak only the left lamp after a road test. For a right 90 only the right lamp. Confirm settings on an interstate or other big road. The right lamp might have to be tuned to spot road signs.

Because the 911 lamp placement is relatively low to the ground high watt low beam adjustment allows a far reach without getting flashed.

Find a flat surface, a parking structure would be good.

Measure 25 feet then adjust the light to the same height and width as your baby

do a search and you'll find the pages from the owners manual on this that I posted + some info on H1's and diagrams

if you have a flat driveway you could do it outside of your garage

I use the local Jr. High parking lot

Throw a rag over the light you aren't working on. It makes it a lot easier to adjust them.

I aim one light at a time (using the rag to block the other one) at my garage door. The panels gave me a great level reference point for each side.

I've used Daniel Stern's site (and suggestions) with success. Great stuff. I never got flashed using E-codes w/ HIDs in my previous car (Audi A4) aiming my lights as Daniel suggests.
