Recommendations on a '77 911 Targa

I have a buddy looking to get into the Porsche crowd and has located a 1977 Porsche 911 Targa locally. I am more knowledgable on the earlier 911 and 914's. Can you guys offer some advice on this car? What to look for, what to look out for. Any opinions on the price, year, engine, etc?

Thanks in advance,
Britain

By the way, he is interesting in a car that would make a good/decent daily driver.

Good gas mileage is also a concern. Realiability helps also.

I would have him get a mechanic of his choosing to do a Pre-Purchase Inspection (PPI). Cars of this year can be reliable if they have been maintained and have the engine updated to cure the ills that they had with the chain tensioners, head/cylinder studs and valve guides. Do a search on the 2.7 for more details. Once fixed, they're reliable (as reliable as a 30-year auto can be).
For good gas mileage, it may not be the best selection, as he'll see gas mileage in the low-20's at best.

Britain,

You don't give much info about the car - like has it been modified or is it stock? How many miles - what kind of service history......

What to look out for? Pulled head studs, rust, and transmission trouble. If it passes a quick inspection, get a good PPI from someone that is not connected to this car in any way.

I have used my 1975 as a daily driver for a number of years - but I am pretty committed to maintenance and fixing things. This kind of car would not make sense if your friend had to pay to have a mechanic fix things.

The price is very reasonable if the short description is accurate. As Porsches go, the color is good, the mid-year has a bad reputation (but the issues can be corrected), and targas typically don't sell as well as coupes.

Britain,

If the body is sound and hte engine has been cared for, it can be a very nioce car. After all, we do have buddy who regularly beats up on a 2.7.

If it passes the "smell" test, bring it in for a PPI (i.e. looks ok and drives acceptably).

Does it still have it's thermal reactors and 5 blade fan. Does it have an external cooler?

FWIW, that is the price range for smoikey back in '01 when I got her and all we needed were valve guides....
