Varifying if tranny is a 5 spd????

Hi this is probably a real dumb question, but I am parting out a car. The tranny that came with it is a 901 type. I am 99% positive it is a 5 spd, but so many people ask I am starting to wonder for sure.

I will be putting it on Ebay this week, but want to ensure I list it properly.

It was mated to a 69 T engine if that makes a difference. Is there a number on it to check? Or another way?

It is NOT mated to the engine.

Thanks in advance

Shawn

Shawn,

There are two sets of identifying numbers, a serial number and 'type number' stamped on the bottom of the transaxle. The serial number is seven digits long, starting with a '7' and the type number is of the form 901/xx. Both are confirmations of 5-speed vs 4-speed. The '69-'71 spec book will have the decoding information. So ... find the numbers and we can tell you one way or the other.

Shawn, by pulling, pushing, and twisting the shift rod sticking out the front of the case, you can engage all the gears-clamp (lightly) a set of ViseGrips to the input shaft so you can spin it while counting the revoloutions of the drive flanges in each gear. This will give you a pretty good idea of the ratios, as well as verifying how many gears it's actually got.

Shawn,

That is a 1969 model 5-speed, standard ratios.
