Probably not a tech question, but as an ex painter, I will try. You need red, yellow and black. OK, black is settled. A common color "safety yellow" may be close. Reds are all over the place in a lot of shades and hues. Here's the secret: buy compatible paints. I'd buy very low gloss or flat. If your red is not warm enough, use a touch of your yellow in it to bring it slightly more orange. Same with the yellow, too bright, drop in a spoonful at a time of the red. Drop them each or both down a tad with the black; it wont' take much. Don't judge the results until the paint is dry.
For the price of 3 quarts (maybe 2 qts. of the most prominent color), you should have all the material you need. In case your room is big, write down everything you do to the letter should you need more. Deep colors don't cover well, so use a darkened primer towards the color you are going to in each area. And, I want to see! |

Uh, milt, what if he didn't mean the German red/yel/blk you mentioned? I mean, what if he wants to paint his room "Diamond Blue Metallic," or "Signal Orange" or "Viper Green?" Of course, this question is a lot easier to answer if he'd just be satisfied with "GP White."

I did mean car colors and I think I want viper green and the color code I believe is 2d8 so does this just mean I can go to home depot or lowes and ask for a gallon of 2d8 will I get what I am looking for ?

If you can get sufficient paint samples, you might try to have them computer match it at a hardware store. Sherwin Williams sells both auto and home paint....they might have a better chance of cross reference than a hardware store. Then you can touch up the chips on your bumper with some latex and a brush

Nik, you can go to a refinish jobber and look at chips. After you decide on a color, (Guards Red is nice, lol), see if the place will give you a sample chip. If that doesn't work go to a Porsche dealer and you can get at least current colors. Then take said chip to a house paint store and they can most probably match it, as long as it's not a metallic. You'd have to spray a metallic and you'd really have to seal the walls good as to have the paint not soak in. Also you'd need automotive paint for metallics and that would be expensive. I do have an 84' color chart. Good luck and as with Milt we need pics!

Well, I missed that one, that's for sure.
Anyway, take my advice in general, it works. AFA as replicating a car color on a wall, good luck unless you use car paint. Normal paint stores will be useless. Take it from a guy who has painted dozens of cars and hundreds of homes and other architecture. I once had a client in Hollywood that wanted black lacquer on the walls, rubbed out and flat. In today's dollars, my estimate would come to about 25K for one room. I didn't do the job, go figure.

Also, try to visualize you and your friends/family in a room this color (Viper Green). What type of room is it? How big? Type of lighting? What type of furniture will be in it? Furniture?

Try this:
Get a sample or chip from someone - paintscratch.com... Take the sample to a GOOD paint store and ask them to match it. Assume you're not trying to do a metallic... Last edited by tcar; 11-11-2007 at 06:28 PM.. |

Hmmm. Now that's an interesting thought. Select all the paint colors in your house (particularly interesting if you're the type who paints each room a different color), based upon Porsche factory colors. Arena Red for the dining room. Talbot Yellow for the kitchen. Olive Green for the den. Aubergine for the... well, maybe leave that one out. That's something I'd like to see in Architectual Digest.

If you can get a paint chip card for the Viper Green that you want, Home Depot does have the color matching computer and can match it almost exactly. I took them a gas door (not 911) once, and they were able to match it perfectly. They mixed me up some satin gloss, for a cabinet I was painting.

Once you've rollered the color on you will need to wet sand and buff if out.
I suggest an ironing board covered in 400 grit for the initial pass, moving up to 1000 grit. For the buffing you may have luck using a commercial floor polisher held vertically. Hope that helps!

apparently this is getting more complicated then I thought.
First off, if I went to say home depot and asked for a gallon of "2d8" (which is the viper green color code) would I get a gallon of something that looks like viper green or would the guy look at me like I had three heads? And second of all why couldnt i just roll this paint on

Having just painted my media room confederate red, I can tell you that you want to use Benjamin Moore paint...(high solids = best coverage without having to do base coat!!!) I sampled Sherwin's stuff and Behr and the BM paint just covered the white/off-white walls great.
See about getting a paint chip from somebody...as suggested several times and take that to HomeDepot/Lowes and get it color matched.....They will almost certainly not have anything to cross over automotive paint colors to structural/architectural paints. Keep us posted...and obviously post a picture when done. Helmethead |

Wall composition is different than metal and fiberglass, thus you won't be able to paint it the same way, with the same results, finish etc. If you're not trying to have shiney walls like a car, just get something close, nobody will know or care. Or hang metal on the walls and go to town.
I'd go with just a race team's scheme myself.... I did this for my son. Dark colors need a ton of paint to cover. I ordered a pint of eahc of the red and blue. I rolled the entire red pint on and the paint is *still* thin. The blue went on better.

Yeah I went there and 2d8 means nothing but they said they can't color match a picture so im thinking ofjust getting something close to it by comparing it with a picture

Go to your friendly neighborhood auto parts store that handles paint, and borrow the page with the color chip on it that you want to match. Then take it to H.D. and let them mix you up a gallon.

I have the Glasurit color chips from 66-72. I can scan and send them to you. They won't be exact but might get you close. I'll PM my office e-mail. I can scan them tomorrow.
