Up coming Roadtrip.
My buddy who has been looking for a 911 it seems forever has finally pulled the trigger. It is a 1986 911 with around 100ks on it with all documentation going back to 1988 or so.The ppi came back positive 175 psi on all cylinders and leakdown between 3 and 5% across the board. We will be going down next weekend from Vancouver B.C.and driving it back from Phoenix.Any suggestions on interesting routes for the drive back.We don't mind taking an extra day or two as we can't clear customs until Wednesday or Thursday. We plan on leaving Phoenix sometime on Sat.17th.I will try to take some pics and post them when we get home.Should we pick up an extra DME relay before the trip?

Brent,
I would rec'd spending some time on the PCH (Hwy 1) in either CA or Oregon. I'm originally from Vancouver and have done the trip a few times. It's not the quickest way north, but the scenery and the twisties make up for it. My favourite stretch is north of SF. Coastline is rugged and not much traffic.

+1 on PCH. From Santa Barbara north its pretty fine. You go inland a bit until San Luis Obispo, I think and from there its great. Stop at Hearst Castle and take a tour, get reservations before you go.

It's getting a little late in the year to consider too many backroads. Be sure to check weather and bring some basic survival stuff. Especially in a car you aren't familiar with yet.

You could go and check out Sadona, Az take route 179 off of Interstate 17. If you don't go to the Grand Canyon you need to get your head examined. Unless of course you have been there before. Even though I've been there 6 times I wouldn't pass up another opportunity. The big ditch is one of the most amazing things I have ever seen. You could make a run through Bryce Canyon as well. After that start listening to Californians.

PCH Diversion
I agree on choosing the Pacific Coast Highway. However, once north of San Francisco, you might head over to Napa Valley. I heard there was good grape juice up there... But, once halfway up the Napa Valley, you would come to the Oakdale Divide. I takes you over to the Sonoma Valley. You want to drive twisties? You get twisties. From the Sonoma Valley (more grape juice?) you head down the Russian River Valley. Nice road (and they have that juice too!). Before you know it, you're at Jenner and back on the Pacific Coast Highway. Take a right. Vancouver's up there somewhere. Just a notion.

Does this mean he won't be buying my 82!?! Kidding....
Enjoy your trip. Maybe I'll meet both you and your cars one of these days.

if it's his 1st ride thru the west i'd save the majority of PCH for another day. Maybe a ride in the SW corner of Oregon just above the border. N Oregon into Wash on PCH gets boring fast. The Carmel PCH area is a pretty place at 40mph.
A Phoenix to Canada ride can be full of sights + exciting and fast at 70-90mph cruse. If this is doable figure door to door mileage and double it. Limit + 10mph and nobody will bother you. Zigzag your way north. Save the length of PCH for a slow ride with the bride.

We are taking our golf clubs and have 1 game set up at a friends place in Palm Springs(Bermuda Dunes) and am hoping if the timing is right to play Bandon Dunes as well. With Thanksgiving on Thursday I don't think we can clear customs until Friday. And sorry Jorian ,Neil found his car while vacationing in Phoenix last week.

The 5 is probably the most boring route, at least until you reach Redding, but likely the safest.
If it looks like the weather is clear, consider the 395 all the way into Oregon. Probably the most scenic of the non-coastal drives in CA!
