Paint bonding issue on early galvanized cars?
I just read a thread about a 77 930, and the original poster (kilodawg) mentioned something that piqued my interest. He stated that the car showed some paint bonding issues typical of early galvanized cars. Has anyone else ever heard of this before, or have more details? I am interested because I had my 77 completely painted about 10 years ago due to some very funky patterns showing up under the paint on the doors and quarters. All was good until a couple of years ago I noticed that it appears it may be starting to happen again - and again only on the sides of the car. The horizontal surfaces seem ok. It's not nearly as bad as the first time, but I'm hoping it won't progress. This was supposed to be a bare metal repaint (I wasn't their to monitor the progress), so I don't think it is due to incompatible materials. And besides, Stoddard painted the car and they know what they're doing.
I tried taking some pictures but the defects aren't showing up too well. I'll try again later and post pictures if I can capture it. edit: btw, I did a search before posting and couldn't find anything on this topic. Thanks, Frank

I'm having issues with my 79 repaint. I just had the hood repainted because the little paint bubbles were turning into big bubbles and lifting. All I could find was a recommendation to epoxy prime over the galvanizing and then paint it.

i am running into the same issue on the boot lid. the bubble cracked and its flaking off now, does not look to good. i plan to get the whole car repainted because in the mid-80's it was painted single stage black and there are bonding issues as well but that might be because it is emoron(sp) paint.
