915 Transmission Problem in 1980 911 SC
My friend (who has a lot of 911 mechanical experience) and I replaced my transmission with a rebuilt unit recently. We also put in a new clutch, flywheel, and the arm that moves (don't remember name). I also replaced the worn out wood floorboard piece that sits behind the pedals as well as the rubber stopper. The car shifts well with the exception of a rubbing noise when the clutch is pressed on all the way. If I release just slightly the noise goes away. The transmission and engine have been removed and reinstalled but with no change. Replacing the worn out floorboard (and the rubber stopper on it) did not change anything. Everything else checks out ok. The only solution I found is to make the rubber stopper bigger, which prevents the rubbing. However, it is clearly "rigged" and I am looking for suggestions for a proper fix. Help! Thanks. ------------------ Donald Weintraub 1980 Porsche Red 911SC Coupe |

There is a proper spec for clutch adjustment. You can find the procedure in Pelican's tech article section. I suggest you make sure the cable is correctly adjusted before looking elsewhere.

Don:
I seem to beat this drum alot now since I did the job...did you rebuild your pedal 'box and thus replace the bushing on the clutch shaft "ear" that goes into the center tunnel and from which the clutch cable runs? This was causing me grief for a time. I'd also ask if you got that clutch adjustment just right. For my '78 SC, I followed the manual: adjusted the clearance at the trans to 1.2, hooked up my clutch cable (bent arm forward to do this, then back) and readjusted to 1.0 to preload the cable. Next step is to make sure the difference between the clutch pedal up and clutch pedal down, as measured at the cable under the trans (i.e. how much cable shows between these two conditions) should match the spec. which I think is 24.5mm. You adjust this via the little rubber stop you have referenced. Hope this helps, Jw |
