grind edge of hood - how to repair?

I need to grind the edge of my 911 hood where it rests on one side next to the cowl by about 3/16" the entire width. (Let's skip the "why?", but the gap needs to increase by that amount.

Now the hood edge is folded over and the metal thickness is such that once I grind I will be through metal and the edge will have to be welded or brazed and that is where I need help - how should the edge be prepared so that the paint shop can then re-spray the hood?

Anyone know of a shop in Ft. Lauderdale are that can do this?

Thanks in advance -

I assume you've run out of adjustment due to other body work adjacent to the end(s) of the trunk lid.

Use the same technique to align and space any panel evenly.

Wrap tape around the edge, then mark the amount to remove + a little more. Grind away the excess material. Find a good welder who can build up the edge, enough so there's enough material to grind and sand to the correct contour, shape and the required gap distance. This takes time and skill to pull off correctly.

The gap around the oil tank filler door on '72 911s always bothered me. I'm waiting for someone to fix what the factory should have done. Instead, the factory-original crowd faithfully reproduces the unsightly 3/8" gap around the filler door. What is this, a Corvette?

grind back a little past where it needs to be and then weld 3/16" mild steel rod under the edge. you could try to build up enough weld on the edge to file and shape but you'll be putting a lot of heat into the lid and will probably warp it. steel rod is fast and clean and neat. old-time rodder's trick. or, if you know a GOOD bodyman. heat up the edge, unfold the factory edge, hammer and dolly flat, and fold it again where you need it. I'm not that good, but I've seen it done. impressive.

911pcars - just order the extra-large '72 oil door from pelican.
