Made it back to Dallas

Hey guys,
The Porsche Gods smiled on me. Drove 2908 miles from Seattle to Dallas in the newly purchased '70E and had a great time. Left there Saturday night and arrived back home this afternoon. The car performed very well with only one minor problem that I repaired in about 10 minutes.

Saw lots of cool things and glad I did it, but man am I beat. I'll update my website this weekend with some pics that I took along the way. Thanks to all of you who replied last week with advice and support, and special thanks to Jim and Tyson for offering help up at the top end of the trip.

The car turned out to be better than I expected. Runs, looks, and drives great.

JackOlsen, stopped by Buttonwillow to take a couple of pics, didn't realize that it was a new facility. Looks very cool. Have fun out there tomorrow.

Wow - what a road trip! You just did in a few days what's a typical year's worth of driving for my 70E!

Glad to hear she held up fine...

Excellent news! Congratulations!

Yes, Buttonwillow just got a new building put up at the center of it. It's a pretty simple facility. I think it's owned and operated by the SCCA.

Great stuff! Don't forget to take a minute and write down everything about the car's performance that you wanted to "get-after" once you landed in Tejas.

Good job, man! Wonderful that you made it with no serious problems. That's the way to break in a car. That's also a hell of a lot of miles to do in the seat of a 911. Trust me, I know!

Let's see some good pics!

Congrats!

I was thinking of you this week. Last October I drove my new (to me) 79 SC from Southern California along the coast to Seattle in two days (in the company of a good college buddy’s very modified ’71 T as far as SF). That drive was the very best thing I could have done to get in touch with my new baby. Glad you had the same experience.

The trip was a serious bonding and learninig experience about this car. I learned about different smells that it produced and when, the factors such as temp/alt/humidity and how they affect oil temps. Learned how it reacts on wet roads and in high winds.

The 911 is such a different beast from normal cars, this really was the way to learn it. Would have taken months to get its quirks down as well as I now have. I highly recomend that new owners take their 911s out on at least a long weekend to do same. As many of you told me, it was an experience that I'll remember.

2 things that I did realize...E needs new, more supportive seats and a thicker steering wheel. My more than ample butt and my right shoulder are serious sore!!!

hoff944 is right - if you do change your seats OR your steering wheel, I highly recommend keeping the originals. If you ever want to show or sell the car you can easily put it back to stock. If you sell your seats, good luck finding another pair like them down the road for the same money!

Anyway, I went to the early sport seats and a Personal "Fittipaldi" wheel on my 70E Targa. Costly but worth it IMHO. I always felt like I was sitting "on" the stock seats, not "in" them.

Enjoy the ride!

I don't know about in the '70 cars but the seats in my '72 E are shot. They have absolutely no support because the springs have just lost their tension. They are definately in line for an upgrade.

I'll definitely store parts that are changed out. My seat covers are perfect, but the springs are weak. Steering wheel is also in primo condition, just want something with better grip.
I've decided not to do any mods other than bolt ons to this car. It is so close to original and so clean that at some point may be completely restored. Still has the aluminum hood and trunk. I'm already thinking about finding a roller for an RSR conversion...hey, a guy can dream can't he? Have I told you guys how much I love this car?

well i guess you got your proof that you bought a solid mechanically sound 911 and judging from the previous pics it also looks cosmeticaly beautiful. i can only imagine your...enthusiasm. of course, we are going to expect more pics of your new ride. agree w the forum, keep it original or update w "bolt on" items only. you have a rare original and that's why you bought it in the first place.
