Value of 1986 carrera targa

hello all,
I have a 1986 Targa, it has high milage just over 160,000, I do not know if it has been rebuild or not, it runs very good. There is a little smoke at start up if it has been sitting for week. I know it should not be sitting for a week, they are made to drive, but I travel for work allot. The PO installed a new clucth just before I bought it, I also had to have the alternator rebuilt.

A few of you might remember me asking about this right before I bought it about 4-5 month ago. I am thinking of selling it because I want to put more $$ ionto my 1965 911, I am restoring..

The only bad thing that I know about it is it has a salvage title, It was hit in the rear a while ago, I still have the carfax report somewhere, It was then sold to a body shop owner, it looks good, it has a little bit of damage on the rear lower bumper where the PO's let it roll back into another car, and a little damage under the front bumper, not much al all. The radio should be replaced.

Otherwise then the above it is in good condition.
Any idea what it is worth, I know there is a broad range here, but it does not hurt to ask.

Thanks
Bruce

You know I hate to say it, but head for kbb.com and just use their system. This will factor in where you live so that you know what you'll likely get.
After you hit them, I'd go ahead and head for
www.recycler.com --a southern CA newspaper with a lot of automotive ads. They ought to have a porsche for that year in there somewhere, and see what they're going for.
The salvage title is the problem of course....

Kurt,
Thanks for the honest reply, I figured the salvage title might be a problem.

Thanks

A buddy of mine owns a small car lot here, he told me a salvage title is worth 50% off book price.

Bruce maybe I can offer you a little advice as I have been buying and selling cars for most my adult life. I think your best bet to sell your car is to price it reasonably and under the market value of that particular model. Unfortunately most people looking for a Porsche are pretty picky and want books and records and all that crap. If I was to look at a car like yours I probably would not pay too much more than 10,000 for it. I would personally just take a lot of pics of the car and put it on Ebay set a reasonable reserve and the car will sell. hope that helps. David

My old Escort had a salvage title at one point. I went and got it inspected and had the title changed back over to a regular one. All you have to do is be able to pass inspection.

I agree with Automahn's valuation. I paid just under $18,000 for an '84 cab with almost perfect paint and only 52,000 miles. Last fall I saw one just like with about 60,000 miles on the odometer in a used car lot marked down from $23,000 to $19,000. Last month I saw an 88 or 89 coupe in the paper for $15,000. It lasted only one week though, and was probably low because it's currently about 15 below here. You can probably get someone to fall in love with the car and pay close to full retail price, but I think that with 160,000 miles and a salvage title, about $10,000 would be fair for a private transaction. Just my $.02.

I think you would do very well to get $10,000.

Well I just thought I would chime in again. I have an 81 911SC that I bought from the original owner with books and records. My car had 170,000 miles on it but the engine was rebuilt 15,000 miles ago. My car is immaculate inside and out and was very well cared for and loved. The person I bought the car from was asking 12,500 for it. I wound up picking it up for 9600. I have already turned down 12500 for it. Ebay would be a real good place to sell your car as there are a lot of people there and some of them just want a Porsche, just be as descriptive as possible and make sure to list all the flaws of the car along with the good points at least with ebay you will know in 10 days if your car will sell ....you may have to list it twice. The nice thing about ebay is the size of the market and the number of people you are exposing your car to at once. Hope this helps and good luck...keep us posted. David

If the car is not burning a whole in your wallet and you have a person you can trust in Georgia you can get a real title.

The trick is to sell it on a written piece of paper to your GA buddy and he can get a GA title and then sell it back to you, depending on CA historical records, and you will get a real title in CA... This process works in VA and NC anyway Anything else I plead the 5th.

Forgot to add that the wreck damage maybe the worst selling point of the car.

I do not like to buy used cars that have been wrecked. Neither my 79 SC or '66 VW have been wrecked.

Also records add value.

I agree gar-bay.com will yield the best results because in general these may be less picky buyers.

I paid a premium for mine because of the records, no wreck, no rust, good paint, whale tail, Nardi wheel, 16" Fuchs, and knowledgable owner. Downside, high milage at 186,000. I paid $11,500 for a '79 SC, some may say it is too high, but I knew what I was getting.

Thanks to all who answered...

It all comes down to what I would sell it for and what I would keep it for, I don't have top sell it, but if I could get a certain price for it I would, I just have to figure out what that price is.

I would also like to be honest with the buyer, even if I did get a clean tiltle, carfax does list it as a salvage tilte.

I'm sure I could get more then what I have in it on e-bay, but is it woth the hassle?

Has anyone on here delt with buying or selling a car on e-bay????

Have a good weekend.
Bruce

Bruce I have good luck selling cars on ebay. I personally will not buy a car from a picture I have to see feel smell touch and most important drive a car before I will even consider buying it. I sold a car on ebay one time and when the buyer arrived at my house I asked him if he wanted to test drive it he declined and said he would have plenty of time on his way home he paid me cash for the car and was on his way..... If you do go the ebay route just post lots of pictures you will get better response.

David,
Thanks for the advice.I'm not sure if I would buy a car site unseen, unless it was a project car for a very good price.

If I do post it on e-bay, I will post a bunch of pictures, like you said the more the better. And I will make sure all the info is correct. I've sewen how some actions get chewed up on this site for the wrong information.

Have a good weekend.
Bruce
