Piston Cylinder ID
I took the parts to a local cleaner and when I got things back I can finally read the numbers and symbols on several of the pieces. Of great concern is the Piston and Cylinder sets. No where do they say Mahle. inside the pistons I can make out what looks like a backwards K with an S over top of it. Is this the KS Piston markings? The cylinders have the same stamping with these numbers next to them: 885/2A + on three of them and then 885/1B+ on two and the last one is 885 + A.
I know the only other owner and no major engine work was done so this must have come from the factory like this. I have polished the cylinder walls and broke the dull glaze. No metal was taken off and the cylinders mic out great with 220K miles. In summary, I'm going with a 964 cam grind, and running CIS. Should I stay the course with these P&C's or should I get into an upgrade. Any recommendations?? ------------------ 78 3.0L CIS 911SC |

Here is what I know; My cylinders say Mahle on the outside base. They have a 'slight' magnetic draw and this leads me to believe that they are Nickasil. I believe (i'm sure that someone can confirm this) that the cylinders are Alusil and from the research (a.k.a. asking Warren) I did, you shouldn't try and hone those puppies. You may be able to have them striped and Nickasiled but I believe that is running in the $900 range (saw this on an earlier post) With that mileage I would suggest changing them unless you like taking the engine apart.
Should you desire, I have my Nickasil P&C set from my 78 3.0 w/CIS That have about 100,000 miles on them for cheap. Just email me (address is at bottom) and we'll work something out. Check it out though and se what can be done with your current set up. Good luck, Adam Roseneck P.S. EBS will do the nickasiling I think ------------------ 1978 911SC 3.0 roseneck@cyberbeach.net |
