Loctite 574 superceded ... source online for Loctite 518 and Dow Corning 111
OK, in a search of Loctite Europe web site today I could find nothing about the 574 sealant! Further searches found one document for aircraft mechanics listing 574 as discontinued and that the supeceding product is Loctite 518 Gasket Eliminator.
There is a California supplier called BestBolts that carries Loctite 518, Dow Corning 111 Silicone Grease, and metric bolts, including the DIN 985 nyloc nuts we need so many of in M8 and M6 for the various covers around the 911 engine. www.bestbolts.com ------------------ Warren Hall 1973 911S Targa |

Thank you once again Warren, I have been looking for a supplier of this stuff FOREVER. No body seems to carry the stuff around here so I'll have it shipped here from those guys. Any thought on price comparison? Are these fellas competitive?

Adam,
They seem to be very competitive on everything ... US$19.56 on the DC111, US$9.66 for 50 ml Loctite 518, and US$4.12 for 100 M6 Nyloc nuts (for oil sump plate and cam chain covers) and US$7.49 for 100 M8 Nyloc nuts for the valve covers. http://www.bestbolts.com/dept.asp?dept%5Fid=254 http://www.bestbolts.com/dept.asp?dept%5Fid=126 ------------------ Warren Hall 1973 911S Targa |

FYI,
I just purchased two tubes of Dow-Corning 112 (a higher temp. version of D-C 111) for around $10! I purchased the stuff from a place called Applied Industrial Technology in Burr Ridge, Illinois. 630-325-7575 ask for sales dept. ------------------ Kevin 87 Carrera |

Thanks, Kevin! I will have to get some of it! From the spec sheet, the most important characteristic seems to be that it is 'thicker' and stays in place better at higher temps. The 50 degree higher rating is not that much higher than the rating of the 'original' Type 4 grease developed in the 1940s, but the 'stickiness' at high temps could be important in brake calipers, and on the oil return tubes' O-rings, too!

I picked up some 518 at the local NAPA right off the shelf. It seem to be a standard stock item for them.FWIW
