Turn signals
Help! I'm trying to help a friend figure out what is wrong with his turn signals. They don't work. The hazards work. The "park lights" (key off, turn signal switch on) work like they are supposed to. The turn signal flasher humms (buzzes) when you turn the key to "run" and turn on the turn signal. When you do this the lights don't work. I feel like it is a short or a bad ground. We've replaced both the flasher unit and the solenoid. Any advice anyone can offer is greatly appreciated.
Oh yeah, it's an 85. |
Check that you have dual filament bulbs in the flasher sockets. I had one single filament recently and lights came on (running), but wouldn't flash..

If the hazard lights work it's not the flasher.
What does the indicator in the TACH do when you signal? Nothing? pull off all 4 lenses and YES, make sure the right type of bulbs are in there and that they're put in correctly and tight. |
god i hate these turn signals

It sound like a bad ground. the strangest things happen with a bad ground. check the wires at the back of the socket and bucket

Typically if the flasher works for either the hazard lights or the turn signal...you can eliminate it as the problem since it does the same function for both. It just uses a different source of power. If you want to do some testing…this is how you can start: The flasher has 2 different outputs…one for emergency flasher and one for turn signals. You need a voltmeter or test light. First, find the flasher relay. Unplug it from its socket to locate the pin locations. There should be 4 pins: C, 31 49,49a. Put a small piece of masking tape on the top of the relay and mark on it where each pin is...C, 31, 49, 49a. Plug the relay back in about half way so you can still see each contact. Turn on your emergency flasher button and you should observe pin 49=12v (or test light on), Pin 31=ground (or test light off), Pin C switching between 0 and 12v (or test light flashing), Pin 49a flashing between 0 and 12v (or test light flashing). If this is correct, your flasher relay is likely good. Next, turn off the emergency flasher, turn your key to accessory and turn on either turn signal. You should get exactly the same.

I wanted to resurrect this thread because I'm having this issue and wanted to know what to do after I do this: "turn off the emergency flasher, turn your key to accessory and turn on either turn signal. You should get exactly the same." and I don't get the same thing. specifically 49=0.63V and all other pins are 0. What should I do next?

Here's the Circuit.
When did this issue surface?
Please give us more info. The turn signal stalk may be the problem. Lots of good posts on this subject. Using a multimeter try to follow the circuit. You may pm me for a telecon, as electrical problems can be a bit intense to resolve on a website. Good luck, Gerry http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1267472267.jpg |
Thanks 86' I'm going to pm you but here are the facts and yes I've review ALL the threads on this subject many times and as luck would have it I have the one slight difference that makes those threads helpful but not a solution.
I suspect it has something to do with the ignition switch because on accessory mode there doesn't seem to be power getting to the indicators. First off it's a 1972t. PO had a rat problem and since I bought the car 2 years ago I've repaired all chewed wires. All previous electrical issues have been resolved (even the clock works). But blinkers still don't. Here's the issue (and yes I replaced the flasher relay): 1) Car off: Hazards work/parking lights(activated with the indicator switch) work 2) Turn key to accessory: Hazards work/turn signal doesn't (see 3) 3) Turn key to accessory: when indicator switch activated to either side no flashing of lights no sound from flasher relay, no lights on in Tach. 4) During number 3 above checked flasher unit and found pin 49=0.63V and all other pins are 0. Help! |
The key has to be in th "on" position for the blinkers to work. Acc. will not do it.
|
Sorry that's what I meant. The key is as far over as it can be without starting the car.

I don't have a '72 schematic handy...but the troubleshooting should be similar to the schematic above (verify the pin numbers). First remove the flasher relay, turn the key back on and measure the voltage at pin 49. It should be 12v with the key on. If not, go to pin 49 on the back of the emergency flasher switch andlook for 12v. if not there...track on back to pin 15 of the emerg flasher switch. If not correct there...measure at the fuse block..look for a bad connection or corrosion.
|
Figured it out! Thanks to all that helped. Turned out it was a loose connection from fuse 8 to pin 15 of the hazard/emerg flasher switch. Damn rats!SmileWavy

Good job! Congrats. Turn signal problems seem to be a stumper for most folks.
