Transaxle mounts

Can transaxle mounts be replaced without removing the motor/trans?

My car has been jumping out of first at high revs and I'm wondering if the play could be due to old/faulty mounts.

When I drive the car I think I can feel the transaxle moving slightly via the gear shift. I once had the same feeling with a 68 Camero and it was faulty mounts.

Any thoughts?

Yes you can. And that sounds like your problem. I'd do the engine mounts as well. They actually control the twisting force more than the trans mounts. Both can be done by supporting engine or trans with a floor jack. You'll need to lower the rear of the engine slightly to do the engine mounts.

Easy job, do what Tyson says. Someone posted a while ago a guick fix that may help. They said to turn the big washers upside down (the washers on both the motor mounts and tranny mounts) and keep the existing mounts. This may give you an idea if you are on the right track. I put Pelican parts sport tranny mounts on my SC and got a good improvement.

Hey Tyson,

Is it a weekend job or a couple of hours for the trans mounts?

Also, how do you lower the engine? Does it involve loosening everthing and letting drop down slightly?

Have you ever experienced the jumping out of gear?

I'm not sure there's much that needs removing. You can drop your motor a couple of inches with a minimal of fuss. I'd loosen the tranny mounts just a bit. Possibly disconnect the shift linkage under the panel on the tunnel near your rear passengers' feet. Perhaps some air hoses shoudl come off, and the electrical plug near the fusebox.

It's a 2 hour job at most. The trans mounts will take a few minutes. The engine mounts about 1.5 hours or so, probably less. BTW, I was the one who recommended the washer flip in a past thread. I didn't think anyone even noticed that. That was a long time ago.
