Dumb Euro headlight fitting question
I have the stock US style lamps on my '76 911.
After seeing Jack Olson's car with euro & US spec. lamps, I bought some Euro H4 lamps for my baby. I try to fit them, a 5 minute job I think, wrong. I have 4 tabs welded inside the headlamp bowl at half past the hours of 1, 4, 7 and 10 o'clock. I try & fit the Euro lamps & the beam throw adjuster screw fouls the bottom left tab. Do I just hacksaw the tab off or cold chisel the welds & break off the bracket? Anyone experienced this? I thought the two lamp designs were 100% interchangeable. I don't want to start sawing bits of my car off if it's not neccessary. Thanks, JG |

I had the same problem Jon. At the time I wasn't on this BBS yet so I just said what the hell and used my grinder to ground off a part of it. Any other ideas?

I just covered them with a piece of cloth and carefully hit them with a hammer to bend them forward a little (and down). The H4's then snapped right in.

Thanks Gents.
I think I'll try the hammer trick, then at least the brackets can be bent back if needed. Maybe the next owner will want to re-instate the US type lamps. I always have waves of self doubt when it comes to sawing bits of car away. Thanks again. JG. |

Can someone tell me why the H-4s are "for off road use only?" I have noticed that some magazines state this. After looking at my H-4s, I can't see why they would be illegal, except for the fact that high wattage bulbs can be inserted. I just hope nobody gives me any trouble when I get my car inspected after I install the h-4s that I just bought.
