2.2E engine rebuild

Well, I should have looked PP Tech Forums a month ago...
I bought a '71 911E , talked to a fellow that so many of you know, at a shop with the initials MM in California, let just say the quote for my engine rebuild doubled, then tripled in 24 hours.......aaarrrgggghhh!!!

I need a 2.2E engine in "good" shape, any one know of such an engine?

You're not alone. I too found out about Pelican when I was doing research on MM. I hadn't got as far as sending them anything, but I was only days away from shipping everything off to them. Red flags started going up when I read their engine rebuilding web site in detail. They have great prices to reel you in, and a really long list of new parts they are going to replace. The problem is that the parts list only covers parts that a very good engine would need - new gaskets, nuts, bolts, and washers. None of the things that are normally replaced during an engine rebuild are mentioned. That's how they start raising their prices once they "tear down and inspect" your engine. You'll eventually need a lot more than they mentioned in the basic rebuild price.

Milt is right - get as much of your engine and parts back as possible. It seems like they have a giant bin that they throw all the parts into, then use what they need from the bin during the rebuild - mixing and matching randomly, so there may not be any way to get your actual parts back.

If it were me, I'd try and rebuild the original engine to maintain the value of your car. Once you get the parts back, it may not be as bad as you think. There are several very good and reasonable shops that can help you. Most are mentioned on this site in various threads.

Sorry to hear about the MM fiasco !

-don't mean to hijack, but if you find a new, working engine, I might be interested in your non-working/complete motor. I'd like to learn how to rebuild one and since mine is a '70E too, it'd be a perfect candidate.

That is true.... If you're in SoCal (isn't that where MM is ?), there are quite a few options for you, from some real good people.

If you were going to have a total rebuild done on that particular motor though, it probably won't be cheap. But you'll still have a number matching car (if that's important). Search for some other threads, I seem to recall there were some with price estimates.

Thanks for the help!! I am in Alberta, Canada. I bought the car in California (the car was originally from my home town, Calgary), so I sent it to MM to replace the 2.4 that was in it with a proper 2.2E.
What would it cost, ball park, to build a 2.2e(correct numbers) that was in need of a full rebuild, and exchange a 2.4cis in need of a minor rebuild?
Does 10,000.00 sound ok?
Also, is it worth the extra $ to go mfi over carbs? Will it increase the value a lot?

TOTAL guess, as I haven't done it myself, but I'd guess a full rebuild of a 2.2E (especially if it needed the MFI pump to be sent out and re-calibrated) could hit $10 Grand.

The cost to rebuild your engine properly will cost you closer to $20k than $10k. I pray to the Porsche gods that the engine in my '71E will last forever...

Since you are in Calgary, and possibly looking for a good used engine, you could visit Hima at Riegel Tuning. He is very knowledgeable (and seems very busy), but may be able to help you out. It's nice to have a good resource near by.

As was mentioned there are a few very reputable shops around that can do complete rebuilds, strictly the machine work, or anything in between. (ie. www.competitioneng.com)

If you are interested, you could get any necessary machine work done and assemble it yourself using Wayne's book:
