1977 fuel tank replacement/recovery

The fuel tank in my '77 has a healthy amount of rust. I have researched threads regarding POR and cleaning of the tanks. Any issues with the plastic baffles that may be in a '77 tank?
New tanks or Fuel Safe Cells are options but pretty expensive. Is there a good source for refurb or repros?

Thanks, Tim

I have a rust problem with the tabk on my 75. I called POR and they said the sealant would have issues with the plastic baffles.

Thanks for the infor CARRERIC. What options have you considered. Do you know of any source for mid-year replacement tanks?

Timz,

There is a company in CA that opens the tank and refurbishes the interior and closes them back up. I remember reading this thread on the engine rebuild forum. Someone had mentioned them and I think the cost was aroun $350.

I had that done to mine. $235 with a 3 year guarantee. It involves sandblasting, so I wouldn't think the plastic baffle would survive. They don't split the tank in two. The coating on the inside is baked on. I found this service at a big radiator shop. Seems to be a franchised process called renu or something close.

There have been some informative threads on fuel tanks. I posted photos of my disected 911-T (CIS) tank on 09.09.03. You should review this and other related fuel tank threads. Your engine deserves clean fuel and you deserve fuel safely contained and delivered to the engine. Various sealants will probably not solve internal rust problems and may create new problems. As these cars age, more of us will be faced with the expense of buying new tanks.

The Fuel Safe Cells and factory tanks are in the neighborhood of $1,500. It seems that there are suppliers of reproduction tanks for all but the mid-year 911's.

In considering used tanks, any info on compatability and durability of post-1980 tanks with mid-year 911s?

I'm looking into sealing my 77 tank as well. After some searching here (that's how I found this old post) it seems like Tank Renu might be the way to go, but I have read conflicting posts on their process. Some say they split the tank and weld it back, other say they don't. Some say the plastic baffles are replaced, but how would that be possible if the tank was not split?

And are the CIS tanks (73.5-83) the only ones that have these plastic baffles???

I'll call Tank Renu and find out more info, but was wondering what other people's experience with them was like, and what exactly did they do. The outside of my tank is in pretty good shape, so all I really need to have done is the inside, but if they clamshell it, I can see why they would need to refinish the outside as well.

thanks,
Frank

I had taken my tank to a Radiator shop and payed to have them "clean" it. It wasn't coated inside and after researching it I didn't think that I wanted it to be. It was still wet inside when I picked it up and that didn't bother me I had lots of time for it to dry. The outside had half of the paint peeled off and the other peeling. It looked like crap. A couple of days later the inside had dried. I shook the tank and I heard rust sliding around. I beat the tank and I heard more rust fall to the bottom. I beat and shook out as much rust as I could and wound up with a big pile of rust on my garage floor. If the tank doesn't get cut in half its not going to get all the rust. Once you pay some one to do it the right way you could have just bought one of these from Wayne. http://www.pelicanparts.com/cgi-bin/ksearch/PEL_search.cgi?command=show_part_page&please_wait=N&make=POR&model=911M&section=BDYchs&page=1&bookmark=21&part_number=PEL-PP914191
