Questions about ST style flares
Hey there folks,
I recently purchased an '86 Carrera that was side swiped by a minivan and sustained some passenger side damage. I'm rebuilding the car and at the same time trying out a few ideas. I've always liked ST style cars and I'm considering turning this '86 into a longhood ST style car. Please look at these pics and tell me if the front and rear flares are starting to represent ST style flares front and rear - more specifically the rear. Please disregard the mismatched bumpers, hood, flags, etc. - those will be installed later.        Also, the tires/wheels in the pics are 951 8x16 Fuchs front with 225/50/16 tires and 9x16 Fuchs with 245/45/16 rear tires. What do you think? Are these ST-ish flares? |

Yes, your rear flares still need more work.
 It looks like they should start flaring out before the torsion tube hole.

Damn, that might be my old 911! I had an '86 sunroof coupe- black with cancan red leather. I'd ordered it new and sold it in '96. Lost track of it after that. Can't be that many '86's that color combination. And Virginia no less. I'm going to have to find my old vin, but I believe it ended with 398. PM me and let's compare VIN's. When I sold it, it had an Autothority mass air sensor, SSI's, 9.8 Mahle P&C's, C2 cams, 22/28 torsion bars and H&H sway bars.

the rsr type fiberglass front fenders are good. i'm confused about the rear flares - are they stock rs/sc/carrera or modified? if they are modified how did you do it? i think it looks great so far. also, fit the turn signal housings and headlights in those fg fenders before painting, they usually require some fabrication and adjustments to fit.

Conrary to popular opinion, there is more than one type of "ST flare." To make a long story short, the first cars that were built that were eventually called an ST (frankly, a bit of an over-used term) didn't have much more flare in the rear than an SC or Carrera. The shape of the flares was differerent but that distance they protruded from the body was similar.
Most people would say that you want the look of the ST from '72 or so. Use a 2.8 RSR front flare and a rear flare that is close to that same projection, but not as much as a 2.8 RSR rear flare. Or, do whatever pleases you . The cars we now call an ST were really just 911s that were built for racing, with whatever options the original purchaser wanted. What would you have wanted 35 years ago? JR |
