Can't remove the rotor - any ideas?

Hello all, in the spirit of holiday season i decided to treat my 1975 911S with a tune up. So things went well untill i decided to replace the rotor and rotor cap and found that i can't remove the rotor. i know it supposed to just come off when pulling on it but it goes up a little and stops. It seems that the rod on which it is mounted lifts with it... is there something wrong with the distributor or am i doing something wrong here? Seems like it should be an easy job... Any ideas?

Thank you!

How hard are you pulling? It takes some force to pull it off.

Sometimes a light tap on the top (not hard, just a tap) of the rotor with a plastic hammer will break free the stiction between the bakelite rotor and the steel shaft. Tap down then pull off.

I had EXACTLY that problem earlier this year. I ended up removing it in slices using a hacksaw until it was small enough to split apart. As you are going to replace it, this will not be a problem.

In my case, it was rust of the top of the shaft that had caused the shaft to expand and hold the rotor more tightly than usual. This suggested the PO had not serviced it lately and, as I dug further down, I found the vacuum advance mechanism was also frozen solid from neglect. Being able to fix that made it all worthwhile as the car ran MUCH better afterward. You have no idea how useful vacuum advance is until you suddenly get it back after having none. The car is more lively, uses less fuel and runs cooler. Bonus!

Rotor removal

Thanks to the board!! I couldn't get the rotor removed from my distributor - quickly read a few posts and just tapped on the top of the rotor with a rubber hammer as suggested and voila! rotor popped right off. The top of the shaft had some rust as seen in the picture, so the taps loosened things up.
Thanks!! Goosh
