Early CV joint questions (many)

I've dismantled 4 axles in search of 4 good CV joints to rebuild a pair of axles. Pic is of one set.

I've noticed that in each set, 2 of the cages/bearings are fairly loose in the joint body while 2 are more stiff. Any ideas why? Which is "better"?

Casual inspection doesn't show any wear, but is limited with these together. Is complete disassembly a good idea? Should all components from a single joint always be kept together?

this pic shows circular grooves cut into the center a little better. Some have more of these than others.

the classic 'clicking' happens when the balls wear a divot into the outer housing or the inner collar. I used to dis-assemble to clean and repack but no longer. just make sure they're clean and perfectly dry, and hold it in one hand and pack the grease in with the other one. putting them back together after dis-assembly is like a chinese puzzle. but I'm lazy so take the above FWIW. :) in a 911 the shafts run practically straight anyway so I've found you can get away with a lot, CV-wise.

I would take them apart I did as stated and just cleaned and repacked them I knew better but...anyway had axle start to get real noisy on the way back from Rennsport about Atlanta it was one of those I told myself situations

good advice Tony.

took them all apart. some are very worn and would make a nice doorstop. Others are pretty good. Going to strip the shafts and POR15 them and then get these put back together.

Fairly deep divots here. clearly the reason why these were loose.

No flash doesn't focus, flash doesn't show the divots. These two pieces are junk from wear.
