Remote radar
I just bot a '87 911 which has a row of vertical opennings in the center of the bumper. It appears as though there is a flat wiring harness that leads to my instrument panel. When I turn the key, a small window in the speedo displays a row of lights.
Anyone ever seen anything like this? Thanks |

Maybe its a hook up for a stealth plasme rifle. Is there a cross-hairs anywhere near your window?
![]() I'm just playing around, more than likely, its a remote radar dector, you'll have to check it out from behind to see what make it is and then you can probably buy new sensors for it (relatively cheap I believe). Adam Roseneck If you don't like the lights, I'll take whatever you have left of the set up... ------------------ 1978 911SC 3.0 roseneck@cyberbeach.net |

I would think that with the flat wiring harness, the PO (previous owner) installed an ESCORT SR-1 remote detector. The newer SR-1 has phone cable terminals to make installation easier. I think the older ones were just open wires, however. Do the lights go along with any beeps? Do you see the lights any time other than startup?

I just took delivery last week snd with the weather like it is all I do is sit in it and use armor all. So I'm not sure what it does. I'm surprised that the PO would have change the entire rubber strip on the bumper jsut for this installation. I just ordered a Passport 8500....maybe I should cancel my order...is an Escort SR-1 any good?

K40 is probably the best remote radar I've seen, but nothing beats a Valentine. I've tried them all and Velentine one rules!

Well, I just returned my newly purchased Valentine. I bought it and an ESCORT 8500 to test together, and there is no comparison anymore.
I posted a question to this board about what was the best detector and more said Valentine than said ESCORT. I now can only assume that they have no experience with the new ESCORT 8500. The Valentine has always been a great detector, but they have done very little advancement in the last few years. I drove around my usual routs with the Valentine and then again with the Escort 8500 and the ESCORT blew the Valentine away. Keep in mind that this comes from a former Valentine Die-Hard. The 8500 has vastly superior range in detection for all bands as well as LASER. The ESCORT also show the number if signals it is receiving as well as their strength, unlike the Valentines Boggie Counter numerical display. Go to www.escortradar.com and read the reviews. While I know it is their website, they do not own the popular mags referenced. Anyone can refute this, but I am offering my experience, side by side with both of these detectors and did it as recently as last month. Best thing about Valentine right now is their buy back policy... |

OOPS – forgot to mention the SR-1. ESCORT says it is no better than their 7500 model and that it is for more discrete mounting only. The 8500 out performs the SR-1 as well. ESCORT even says so…
BTW www.radartest.com has more tests on these and may more detectors. So does www.speedzones.com [This message has been edited by VIPRKLR (edited 03-01-2001).] [This message has been edited by VIPRKLR (edited 03-01-2001).] |

Thanks for the info...I also own a sport bike that needs protection, so I'll keep the 8500 anyway. From what I read, it looks like the new laser and Ka bands are hard to detect in time unless there's traffic ahead being checked...ever try going 150mph in traffic. Maybe I should have bot a Tauras!

Viprklr - Do you have to use their coil cord with the 8500 or can you "hard wire" it with phone wire similar to the sr-1? If yes, does the hard wire allow you to use their cigarette plug so you don't lose the remote display? thanks in advance for your reply.

I haven't recieved the 8500 yet, but they are sending me another cord ($10.00) to hard wire to the bike. QUOTE]Originally posted by robfix:

ROBFIX - i just use the coil cord. You might give them a ring (check www.escortradar.com for that) and ask them.
Sorry... |
