Wow that must have been a lot of work.

What's the dual vertical gauge on the far right? Can you post a close up of it?

Joe Bob 11-26-2007 04:31 AM

Thanks, it's a custom made Westach Volt and CHT meter. Westach does aircraft gauges.

All I did was source the gauges, the connectors and then hand Ingo the parts, supply him with Diet Coke, hand him the solder iron, hold the light steady and feed him a Quesadilla....cheap labor. Gotta love it....

Guess I'll have to call Big Bob Zampardi @ dC Automotive and twist his arm on that signal reducer thingy for the gas gauge....

In response to the PMs.....Yes, the SC Gauges are for sale....on the evilBay.....

Big Bob at dC Automotive came thru on the sender....so now I'll have a working gas gauge.

Hi Mikez

I'm planning to do the same thing with my car

Can I get the electrical wiring diagrams from you?

Regards
Porscheke

wow that looks amazing. Great work!

tcar 11-27-2007 06:48 AM

Why? Aside from the CHT and VM.

Appearance? Anything else?

Not criticizing, just wondering. Don't see the improvement factor for the amount of work involved.

Probably wanted a more modern look, to go along with the carbon dash.

Different strokes.....

Oh, and nice work on the 356!!

But it doesn't look more modern, looks almost the same...

More accurate gauges, modern look, works with the upgraded 3.6 engine, because I can, etc.....%^B

I've been wanting to do this swap for the better looking numerals and even more because of the better illumination of the 964, 993 gauges.

I thought about asking Ingo about this, but then I realized he's an electrical specialist and I am not. So this swap was probably cake for him vs. it being a huge project for an electrical nimrod like me.

Looks great by the way!!!

livi 11-27-2007 11:38 AM

Looks great, Mike!

And with carbon fibre surrounding the guages. Delicate!

NoEardGoat 11-27-2007 11:53 AM

Mike,
What did you need to upgrade, gauge wise, for the 3.6l install?

Joe Bob 11-29-2007 07:12 PM

Well, after a couple of nights driving home I have an update.

First off, the Speedo is dead on....my rear tires are shorter than stock (245/45/16) and I'm guessing closer to the 964 tire height....so my SC Speedo read a LOT lower than actual speed. Something on the order of 10% at freeway speeds. Having an accurate speedo w/o having to rely on my GPS is A GOOD THING.....

Having a 180mph speedo is a bit unnerving but I can see the whole range up to 90+ w/o having to cock it over like Racer Dick....

Lighting, the illumination of the gauges is far superior. No dim spots, the graphics are crisp and clear. No bouncing of needles...even the oil gauge is less spastic. Of course it COULD be that the 911 that the gauges came out of only had 18K miles, was a Tiptronic, likely was in a coupe and was shaded from the sun...so I'm guessing they lead a pampered life before being removed.

The redline on the tach is accurate....it's a 3.6 gauge and I have a 3.6 in the back....

Overall, it was worth the $$, so far, $350 off of eBay for the gauges, $100ish for the connectors from a salvaged wiring loom, and a reach around for Ingo.....

RWebb 11-29-2007 08:59 PM

Does the 964 have a different illumination scheme for its gauges?

And, can you post a pic in low light with the gauges illumination on?

Thanks!

rusnak 11-30-2007 01:38 PM

are the needles illuminated, or did that start with the 993?

4flyboy 11-30-2007 02:16 PM

*****in cool Dude!!

CabMike 11-30-2007 05:12 PM

Any insight on what it take to wire these in? Do you have a diagram? I've been wanting to do this to my SC but need to see what is involved with the wiring.

Thanks,

aigel 11-30-2007 05:28 PM

Very nice job! Going from the SC to a modern gauge is literally like day and night. I was in awe when I drove my 993 for the first time at night. I think this is a great upgrade, and worth some effort. You stare at the dash and gauges a lot, they are right in your face, more than a lot of parts of your car that you never see while driving it.
