87-89 owners

Hello my friends, I'd like to pose a question to get some feedback. How many of you would consider trading your 87-89 carerras in on a 2000 996. Why and why not. thank you for your input.

I'd consider it if the 996 had nice aftermarket parts on it. Some of the stock 996's around here just look too plain Jane. I haven't driven a 996, but my '89 has all the comfort I need and it's a simple air-cooled powerplant that will likely yield more service miles than the 996.

If I had more money, in an instant.

But, I wouldn't be able to do as much of my own work, and that would hurt the $$ side of things. Driving would be great, but not if I was living for my car....

I came close to doing something like that last spring. Drove a cab. After all the waterpumper bashing, it wasn't really too bad - and really, not nearly as different as I thought it would be. Just couldn't shake the RMS and build quality worries - basically, it was too new and too electrical, and I wasn't sure it would last as well as my 87.

Basically decided to keep mine as a summer car, and perhaps look into a used 997 in another year or so as a more year-round car (still has lessened RMS worries and a lot of electronics, but is so much prettier, that I just might succumb). If you find a really nice one, Porsche dealers will be able to give you a warrenty which makes most of those worries moot.

Know that the RMS (rear main seal) problems are supposed to be early and surprisingly rare, but wife insists we send kids to college rather than drop $10K+ on new engine for newish used car....and I pretty much agree with her....

I would not trade my 1988 for a 996, only because the 996 does not represent the same 911 experience to me my 1988 does. The 996 is a great car, and they smoke me at the DE's, but they are not the same type of ride (IMHO).

I would take a 996 Cup car in a second, though.

There is something special about driving, and owning, the car I so desperately wanted when I was in high school- the same can't be said for the girl I dated in high school (she has not aged as well as my recently acquired 911).

In an even trade - yes. Then immediately sell it and buy a 964 RS.

For me, having a Porsche is about want, not need. (Despite the part of my brain that constantly tells me that I NEED a Porsche.) So while the 996 is clearly a better car (more comfortable, more refined, AC that works, higher performance, probably more reliable--though that's debatable, etc.), I'd still opt for the 911 Carrera. The 911 is the car I want. It has been for the past 20 years. I think it represents one of the high points of 911 styling. And the driving experience hits all the right feel-good buttons.

In contrast, while the 996 is certainly a more capable car, its styling doesn't incite the same level of lust. And the performance enhancements aren't necessarily better for me (at least on the street). So that's where I (personally) stand. I recall a line in one car rag regarding the 996's (I think) debut--something along the lines that dollop by dollop the changes in the 911 make the car a better performer, but drain away the character of what makes a 911 a 911. A rough paraphrase, but in the end, everyone's gotta find the right balance for themselves.

No, I don't own my '88 any more, but what I liked about it was the raw feel and the exhilarating driving experience. A 2000 996 won't have that same experience.

Also, I enjoyed working on my car, and despite the motronic fuel and ignition, the car was very simple and easy to work on. A 996, not so much.

NO.

I like being able to work on my own car. It's the car I've wanted since I was a kid. I love my 87.

No.
I like to tinker on mine, and have yet to get through other projects in store.
I really like the lines of the 88.
On the other side Temp issues would be a thing of the past with the 996

I'd NEVER trade my '89 for a 996!

Certainly a 993 C2S/C4S, but not a 996! They just don't do it for me.

Hell No

I have an 89 Carrera 3.4. I've done all the mods that are required short of twin plugging the sucker. I've driven the 996. I don't get it.

The 89 Carrera is what you always wanted in a wife, a slut in the bedroom and a church going mommy outside the bedroom that pays the bills and greets you at the door with a martini and your slippers. The water pumping 996, well it's just milk toast.

You can't compare the two.

Either you want the 996 ride or you want the 89 Carrera ride. One is raw and you'll remember it. You can't wait to drive to to and from work or for that matter just to drive it. The other, the 996, you'll buy it, drive it home and leave it until you have to drive it again to get somewhere.

Just my two cents.
