Post Keepin' my muffler (for now)

Last night as I took the SC for a little spin, I stopped to top up the tank. As luck would have it, another P-car was also filling up. It was a late 80's Carrera all tricked out with turbo-look clothing. When the guy started it up, I thought it might cause another earthquake! Talk about *loud*.
Over the racket (at idle!!), I asked him what sort of a "muffler" he had installed. It was a B&B, complete with headers. As he drove away in a painful barrage of noise, I'm thinking....I could not drive a car like that for 10 minutes much less to California on a vacation. I think I'll keep my stock exhaust setup for the time being. I can spend the cash on the alternator (when it dies).
Does anybody make a decent-sounding muffler that won't rob power and still not kill your eardrums?

Hey Doug,

I hate to say this and B&B sorry but there mufflers suck....Two friends have the big Tri-flow system and although they do make power, although I can not tell that they make more power than the SSIs, they are both very loud and crack, crack, crack. I have had to do extensive welding on both of them because they were cracked so badly in the muffler. And since these freinds bought there cars with the systems on them and did not purchase them from B&B, of course B&B would take not responsibility for their products. They will rebuild them for something like 800.00 but to me a 2600.00 exhaust should not need to be rebuilt in two years, whats up.
I like the SSI and one of many mufflers. Bursh makes a pretty quiet , cheap muffler that does have a bark at high RPM.

Thanks for the reply, ks....this is the sort of information that makes this board so valuable. As I look at the pictures of some S.S. mufflers, I wonder about the thickness of the metal. If it's paper thin and un-reinforced, the areas around stress points (mounts, pipe openings, welds, etc) will, as you say, crack.
On the other hand, take a look at the OEM banana muffler. Sure it weighs a ton and a half, but my car has over 75k on the clock and the *original* muffler looks still like new. Why should Porsche owners pay through the nose for shoddy products (like the B&B)?
