Hi just need to vent for a few secs. This morning when I went to work it was -27celsius. That is around -10F
When is winter going to end? I so envy you guys who get to drive your cars year round. Just do us Canadians a favour....When you take your P-car for her next drive, just think about us poor Canadians who are freezing and can't drive ours for another few months. Thanks Shawn |

Why can't you drive your car when it's cold?

Here in Canada they put copious amounts of salt on the roads and it really does a number to your paint and sheet metal. Not to mention that with the amount of snow we get here, it is damn near impossible to drive a rear engine, rear wheel drive car.
For instance, I NEED to use 4WD to get out of my drive way on a regular basis. Adam Roseneck ------------------ 1978 911SC 3.0 roseneck@cyberbeach.net |

Well, I'm not too far south from you. This was my first time to drive the car all winter. With a good set of snow tires the p-car was awesome on snow, even deep snow. The salt is a problem though. My car is a beater, not a garage queen, so I'd rather drive it then look at it sitting. They've stopped using salt here (they ran out!!!), but it's now pothole season, so the car may sit for a while till they patch the roads up some.

I feel for you. I'm living in Vermont. That means 9 months of winter and 3 months of hard sledding (VT saying).
The 911 goes away in November and doesn't come out until mid April (sometimes May). I figure with all the money I save not driving it, I can buy a lot of cool stuff for it in the summer :-) Dan Tolley 1987 911 Coupe (still dead asleep and dreaming of Ruf wheels and a Fabspeed muffler) |

My Camelias are blooming, the Daffodils and Tulips are up and ready to bloom. Everything's green and about 50 degrees F.
But the ground doesn't always hold still. Presents unique suspension problems. ------------------ '83 SC |

Shawn,
Just remember there are *two* coasts to Canada. Here on the "Left Coast" it is a balmy 5-10 C, and damn it....our daffodils are popping up all over the garden!! ------------------ Doug '81 SC Coupe Canada West Region PCA |

Thanks everybody for rubbing it in,
Adam I know you know what its like. Bill I'm sorry there is NO such thing as a 79 911 "beater" all 911s are great, but no salt would be nice, here the salt eats everyting. David I am well aware of the 2 coasts, I moved here from Southern Alberta, and its not BC but it sure as hell isn't the east. I miss the WEST! |

I have been thinking of little else but this topic since about Christmas. It's almost killing me. I dream about driving about once a week. This is my first winter with a Porsche and it's been a hard one. I live near Bill and not far from our Canadian friends and haven't been able to even work on my car since about two weeks after I put it in the garage. I have an imperfect top on my cab and a totally rust free car that came directly from Texas, so driving in Minnesota's salt-filled winter roads is not an option. My garage is not heated, so I can't even work on my car. A few weeks ago it warmed up almost to freezing (0 c), so I though I could at least put vasoline on the Fuchs and glycerin on the rubber and replace the rear speaker.
It is true the vasoline does not freeze. But it gets as hard as candle wax when applied to cold Fuchs. Glycerin globs up like strawberry jam and won't spread. And working without gloves didn't last very long, even with a space heater going. I just hope I didn't blow a gasket trying to start it with the oil too cold. On the plus side, the oil that had been cascading from at least one oil return tube is so thick that it doesn't even drip. It's warmed up her a little, so I'm trying the rear speakers again tomorrow. I'll let you know how long I last. ------------------ MRM 1984 Carrera Cab Eurospec |

Man it was almost too hot here the other day.
It was 84 in Baton Rouge, LA, and 100% humidity. So maybe I could send some hot weather up there, and you could send some weather down here. |

You know I kind of envy you guys who get to drive thier cars all year, but I feel bad for you who have "never" seen snow. It is amazing. There is something to be said about going for a walk on a mild winter evening when the snow is falling hard, ussually that walk is out to my garage to see my car and make sure its OK, but snow really is great, but I think it stays too long.

Before I wrecked my back in a (little) m/c racing crash, I used to like to ski. I could hardly wait for the snow to fall on our coastal mountains. Now, the skis are stuffed somewhere in the basement, and if the roads are bare and dry, the Porsche and m/c's are ready to play!
BTW, here on the "Left Coast" there has been nary a flake of snow all winter, and we are situated high in the foothills. Snow tires for my pick-em-up truck remain unmounted. Fine with me. ------------------ Doug '81 SC Coupe Canada West Region PCA |
