ignition key question
I recently purchased a 1984 Targa as salvage to restore but it did not come with any keys. I went to the Porsche dealership and ordered a key based on the VIN number but it will only open the doors. It will not work in the ignition switch. The ignition switch is still riveted in place, but has it been replaced or is there something else that was special about that year that requires another type of key?

Lock may have been replaced, and the PO drove it with two keys. You should be able to get it re-keyed by any decent locksmith, or you can do it yourself.
It's a project in Wayne's "101 Projects" book, IIRC. |
If you are really limber and have good eyes, the code could still be on the tag that may still be attached to it. You have to get under the dash and look for a white rectangular paper somewhere on the switch. There should be 4 or 5 digits that is the cut code.

I did the same thing with my '84. Had the original key, but it was very worn, and wanted a "fresh cut."
The one key should work in both the doors and ignition, so my bet is on the ignition switch being replaced at some point. |
Thanks for the help.
