Current state of the P-car market
Yeah, it's not technical, but that forum doesn't get much traffic.
When it comes to the market for SCs and Carreras, I'm getting the feeling it's a buyer's market. Auctions on Ebay going without the reserve being met, seemingly good cars sitting in the used car section for a while...etc. I see what people are asking for their cars, but what they actually go for is a mystery. Possibly fueled by the stock market and general economy woes. You tell me. Has around $15K become the right price for a good '84? |

All I can say is that I sold my '84 using the classified section here for north of $15K to another board member in less than a day....So I think a lot depends on the specific situation.

Talking about the average "good" car. A few paint chips, slightly worn interior, etc. but overall perfect running condition. |

My impression is that a lot of these cars were not bought with savings but with Home Equity loans/ Home appreciation money. As such, I feel there will be less demand in the next few years, with the source of these funds drying up. However, this may be offset by there being a bigger price differential between poor and excellent examples since there are less of these cars around every year.

The KBB seems to be 10-20% lower than most asking prices. I think if you cite this difference in negotiating, you might get a good deal. I am looking at two cars right now, one for 35k and the other for 50k (92 and 98.) I will low-ball to the tune of 20% and go from there. The present real estate market is flushing the spendthrifts out and leaving some potential good deals for us responsible people.

There are also seasonal effects. Here in the northeast, we had snow today. The P-car sits under its cover in the garage, waiting...
It will be interesting to re-assess the market when spring arrives and thoughts turn to.... |
