ques for heater backdate for my SC.

1. on the drivers side, will the hose be capable of taking a hard left to get around to the existing hose "bib"? on my car it is on the rear-most engine tin. i think i see the regular opening on the side tin, covered up with a plate held on by four bolts? do i have to use this location, and simply abandon the other rear tin location?

2. did EVERYONE have to dent the heater tin to fit around the distributor?

3. can i do the backdate and still keep an AC system. i only ask this because a good friend is selling me cheap (very cheap) the entire AC system that mark wilson put on his car. maybe the same has jim sims did recently. well the friend offered me the parts, still new in box!

the heater tins are being bead blasted right now. i may powdercoat them (DIY) or just spray them with my leftover semi gloss wurth paint. hard decision with the AC stuff.

I can help with an answer to question 2. You do need to dent it to clear the distributor (or one of the leads), I also had to dent mine to clear a pipe from the oil fed chain tensioners.
It's still worth it though....enjoy.

Vash--

The hose will make the bend on the left (drivers side) of the car if you have the right part, or you are handy with a hammer.

I started to hammer on the original but decided to buy the 930 part:

Left hot air duct, 930.106.321.02

The 930 part is on the left..notice the indentation at the base to fit around the distributer.

The original SC duct is on the right for copmarison.

The A/C will fit after the heater backdate.

Good luck,
Alan

Has anyone attempted the hose reroute by modifying a late model duct somehow?

hammered and painted w/touch-up gun. I hit a socket layed into area and hit the socket. The dizzy will hide imperfections.

I had to make a indentation on the passenger side tin to clear the oil sending unit also.

That's what I did. I rerouted the heater hose on my backdate as you describe. I took a small cut-off wheel and cut away the 3 or 4 spot welds holding the steel tube (hose bib) to the engine tin. I reattached the tube in the opening that lined up perfectly with my heat exchanger. I had to cut a round hole in the plate that is attached to the side tin with the 4 bolts. I have one small hole left to plug on the rear of the tin. Here's what it looks like:

Here's a view from underneath. Notice that the first hose didn't have a high enough temp rating. I replaced it with silicone hose and it's been fine since then.

OK now Im confusd. Im in the process of backdating too and I thought I was suppose to get this piece:

It says its the piece I would need if I wanted to backdate an '86. So Im I to under stand I will need to "bang" this piece up. If so, what is the best method?

None of the pictures show that piece very well, but you need it for the driver's side. Once you try and fit that piece in your car, you'll see that it won't squeeze behind the distributor cap. After you smack it a bunch with a heavy round pipe, it will fit.

As you try the fit you'll see where to bang.

Think about how to do it nicely so it doesn't look like crap. Besides the socket I also used other things to shape the denting. Maybe you'll have a choice to bang where it'll be seen or bang from below sight.

party hearty
