Optima Yellow top better for Cabrio and cold storage?
Hello everyone- now that its cooling off outside my old battery (large heavy one) is getting weaker in my 87 cab. I have been reading all of the threads on the Optima/etc. and have noticed that some people have had problems with the lifespan of these, especially if not kept on a battery tender.
I also read somewhere that the Cabios used alot more of the batteries energy from having to raise and lower the top with the engine off. I don't currently have a battery tender, and plan on getting one, but with my job sometimes leave my car at the airport for a week or so where I would not be able to use a battery tender. It seems that perhaps the Optima yellow top (size 34) would perhaps be more forgiving than the red top from a discharge standpoint and still have power to start the car? 34R CCA=800A, CA=1000A 75/35 CCA=650A, CA=870A Mine is not a track car, so weight is not an issue, but I would like to get away from the spillable acid type battery. I dont mind having to spend an extra $30-50 for the yellow top over the red top model. Thoughts anyone? Thanks............... ![]()

I think the yellow tops are for deep discharge, like running the lights and water pump in a motor home etc. The red top should do you fine with a week or two of standing still. Just my .02c

Thanks for the reply- I was just wondering about the yellow top because I couldn't find out much about it. My current battery is an Interstate with 675CCA which was working okay until it started getting old. But I would like to save a few pounds and get a leak proof one.
I just don't want to create a new problem by having to exchange Optima batteries on a regular basis!
