Porsche Crest 95 Carrera4 Garage Kept with 4k Miles on - How to Maintain?

My Uncle has a beautiful 95 Carrera4 that he has been keeping in the garage for quite some time. It has about 4k miles on it.

What does he need to do to keep it safe and happy?

I would figure

Brake/Clutch Fluid
Anything to do to the rubber hoses (Baby Powder? I think he has been doing that)
Getting it off the tires would be nice but probably not happening
Oil Change before serious drive
No coolant, last year for air cooled
Fuel Stabilizer (Don't think he uses it but should)
?

I think the hood struts are shot so I think those would make a decent Xmas gift. Anything else? =) Try not to flame too much, I know the car is meant to be driven... =)

I looked at a very low mileage 911 once and the brakes were seized.

Just curious, what is he keeping the car for?

Thumbs up

Me, apparently. It's my Uncle's, he drives it on 'perfect' days only. =)

Carrera 4 sitting for a long time

Regrading the Carrera 4 with 4K on the clock. Someone could be very lucky here...or very disappointed. Adrian Streather is perhaps the world authority on the C4. Having owned a nice '90 model I was amazed that the complexity of the systems working together did so in a wonderful manner. Until something went wrong. I now enjoy the simpler '86 Carrera Sport.

My advise is getting your hands on a copy of Adrian Streather's book,Porsche 964 Enthuestists Companion. He also has a book on the 993 C4 that is considered the Bible.

Do NOT attempt any brake bleeding, brake work, or any repairs until you have read up a bit on this particular model. Example: Your mechanic will need a Bosch "Hammer" to bleed the brakes, adjust the hyd. clutch, or to adjust the PDAS system....which all work together off the same hydraulic pump.
The Rennlist has a lot more on the 964/993 models.

I would suggest a strict regimen of track days.

Porsche Crest

What's the Bosch 'Hammer'?

I am pretty sure he has been...
  • Keeping the gas tank topped off (full)
  • Bleeding the brakes
  • Baby Powdering the rubber hoses
  • Starting it probably once a month or so
  • Not letting it sit more than 9 months
  • Oil Changes at some interval

Things I want him to do
  • Use Fuel Stabilizer
  • Rotate the Tires/Get the car off the ground, ideally
  • Replace PS fluid if it has PS
  • Obviously Oil changes before each drive, or at least once per spring/summer season

Basically I am looking for gift ideas for Christmas centered around the 911. Budget ~$100. Books, fuel stabilizer, seem like a good idea. Thinking of getting a Haynes manual, or do they stink for this particular vehicle?

Your uncle must be very strict on determining what a perfect day is in NJ!
(I lived in Bergen County for nearly 4 years and they have a lot of great days).
Incredible to find a low mileage example like this.

Its value is through the roof for such a car (way over regular street prices)..

Baby powder on hoses, that's a new one on me....

Anyway if he has not been using fuel stabilizer, I would think the entire fuel system is shot and probably has some rust in it. (I hope not though)

Drive it drive it drive it...enough said.

If you keep the tank full you do not allow water condensation on the walls, protects the system...

I have some pics floating around. Even has the bra on the front to protect it... =)

Still want more tips/Xmas suggestions

Yes but fuel starts breaking down in about 3 months.

Get him a PCA membership and select NNJR as your local region. Get him to drive the car to a Drivers Ed and see what the car was built for.

Its not a trophy to be polished and mummified. Its a precision piece of equipment thats meant to be flogged at race tracks.
'nuff said.

Hammer is a diagnostic tool... called that because of it's shape... here's a link. See them on ebay once and a while.

http://www.durametric.com/historyofporschediagnostics.aspx

When he starts it (there are pros and cons to this) but he should at least run it long enough to be at operating temp for a half hour or so.

No Haynes (or Bentley) for that car. See other post for good books.

Rotate tires? Aren't front and rear different sizes? Unless they're pretty new tires, I would not rotate side to side now; could break belts. Off the ground is not a bad idea.

He had a 911 turbo before (I suppose late 80s), C4 Corvette, 944, etc...

I agree, car should be driven... Will look at those books and the Bosche hammer link. =)
